cam shaft pulley removal 3vz-e
I have recently began to rebuild my motor. I am stuck!! I cannot get the
17mm bolts that are connected to the cam off. I have broke 3 rachetts so far as well 2 sockets. Am I an idiot? Wjy wont they come off? I am following the lefty lossey righty tighty. Is the bolt reverse threaded? I asked a toyota dealership and they said that they were normally threaded. please help.. a newb out.... The 17mm bolts hold on the timing pulleys... Incase I was not clear!

Hot wrench (torch) is out of the question there, too bad cause it's my favorite. Penetrants only get ya so far. Got cold chisel? Or...
Stubborn nuts, say your prayers. Called nut splitters.

Madvibes, get yourself a good 1/2" drive 17mm impact socket and long breaker bar (If you don't have access to a large impact gun). To hold the pulley from turning, you can either use a strap wrench, or do what I do... There are bolt heads behind the pulley that you can see through the openings in the pulley (I think they're 10mm heads). Take a 10mm socket and long extension (6"). Put the socket and extension on the bolt head, and rotate the cam pulley until it's up against the extension. Have somebody hold that while you crank down on the pulley bolts.

OK, just did this today -- You all make things harder than they have to be -- Take a long extension or breaker bar with a 10mm socket on the end of it and attach it to the bolt behind the sprocket- it is okay if the sprocket turns - (long enough to rest it on the hood support above the radiator. Next take the biggest ratchet/torque wrench(i use my 30 inch long torque wrench) - or you can use a pipe on a ratchet - and turn the cam sprocket bolt off
I am a 5 foot 10 inch hundred and forty pound woman and I can get it off - You cant tell me that my arms are stronger than yours.

thanks
I was able to get it off. I tried to impact guns.. no luck. I then grabbed a snap on breaker bar type 1/2 drive torque thinga ma jig. I broke one more 17mm snap on socket and was able to get it off with a 17mm impact socket. Great it took about 400lbs of arm force plus whatever the length of the cheater bar gained probably around 1600 lbs at the bolt. Thanks for the advice.. Brute force wins again!
