So maybe not the smartest thing when I just finished adjusting my valves and I left my ratchet on the crank bolt. I was using it to turn the crank around until I got it to TDC. The rest you can probably figure out, I go to start it up and here this awful sound and than I shut it off and the dread of forgetting to take off the socket came over me. How do I hold the crank so I can tighten it back up? Does anyone know how many Ft/lbs it needs to be tightened?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the 22re. I am laying under my truck trying to figure out how i can keep the crank shaft from turning so that I can tighten up the bolt. I forgot to mention in the first post that it is a 1987 4runner.

 

I hold the crank pulley with a chain grip, just make sure to take an old belt cut to fit around the pulley and hold it on with a rubber band, This will prevent damage to the pulley when you torque it down.

 

I should start a poll, "Who hasn't started motor with socket on crank pulley?". I know me an' you ain't the only absent minded grease monkeys who done so, surely not.

1987 22RE should have the same specs. I'll check my sources...Yes, 116ft.lbs., all sources back to 85 FSM.

Shoot. I don't have a chain grip handy. Would anything else work? I am thinking that if I tighten up the PS belt and the AC belt and than use something to hold those, that might work. What do you guys think?

 

Ive never had the wrench he's talking about.. I always jam or wedge a pully some redneck way... Use this at your own risk!! Just be carefull where you bind it

 

I think when i did mine i just put the ebrake on, put it in a fairly high gear used the truck and drive train to hold the engine from turning over. Im pretty sure thats how i did it, if the truck still wants to move maybe block the wheels or put someone inside it to hold the brakes on, but i would think that you wouldnt be able to move it too much in 5th with the ebrake on and to be able to hit the torque you need. Idk im pretty sure thats what i did when i did my timing chain. Dont remember for sure though.

I like the red neck way!LOL That is always how I have ever done anything when what I need is not at hand. I am going to jam a piece of wood between the PS pump and mounting bracket and tighten up the pulley.

 

Alright, the wood did not work to hold the crank pulley. I tried putting it in 5th with my girlfriend holding the brakes and still it gives just a little bit. Hmmm. Where else can I jam it?

If you can rig something like that, using some bolts, to keep it from moving that would be optimal. I bet you could even use a peice o' wood, maybe.

 

Hey, thanks all. Great help. I found that using a pry bar between the AC bracket and the crank pulley I could hold it so that I could get it tight enough.

 

X3 on rednecking , I've left my friends very pretty Snap On ratchet on when I first started it up TWICE , lol , I just cant take the anticipation Ha Ha. It left marks of love on the wrench , that I have to laugh at evry time.
