Just thought I get this thread going. I was curious. Myne 176000 miles on engine and 3rd head gasket. factory one in 1991, 0 miles. Recall done at a southern C.A. toyota dealership in 1999. I bought the truck in 2002 and did a head gasket in 2005. Thats just whats on record.

 

2 - previous owner got the recall done, currently on the second.. hopefully it won't need a third

 

2. The original HG blew at 106k. My '95 was not part of the recall. I replaced the HGs and all has been well...(fingers crossed).

 

PO had hg's done per recall, so far so good! *knocks on wood*

 

the block that came in the truck puked its second at 160K ~60K after the recall was done....

the truck currently has a diffrent rebuild motor in it. (so is that 3rd?)

 

on my third

previous owner had the recall done, and I blew that one in November '05

next time it goes it gets replaced with a 3.4...come on headgasket!!!

 

still on my first, original HG.

 

had the recall done way back near new. Now has 234,000 miles on it - no problems

 

Putting the 3rd one in right now at 211K.
2nd one per recall done in 1997 at 83K.

 

1 - Just went through all of the receipts and as far as I can tell the HG was replaced at 75K and I'm now at 185K. Doing good so far.

2. recall HG done at about 70k mi
3. right now (assuming i can get those blasted cam sprockets off!!!!)

 

I'm on number 2 - Recall done at ~80k, 120k later and i'm still good to go.

 

I'm still running on the origional - 187K miles

 

Mine's a 95 so it wasn't covered but it lasted til 156k miles, I replaced it along with new headbolts and I'm at162k miles right now so fingers crossed. My buddy who helped me works at a Toyota dealership and he thinks it will go another 100k as long as I don't spin a bearing or something so I'll see I guess....

 

My 1992 blew its HG at its 3rd time and I am currently working on it right now, with the after-market MLS HG I think it should be fine, I hope, and if it blew on me again I'll think about the 3.4 or part it out.

 

1 - Original HG from factory
2 - @ 88,000 miles had factory recall
3 - Installing new ones in conjunction with a complete engine rebuild from HG failure on the #2 cylinder.

The original headgasket was replaced at 24,000 miles in Nov 2001. The headgasket drivers side blew again in Jan 2006 at 38,000 miles. The first was covered by the recall. The second one cost in excess of $3300 to replace by WestburyToyota an unscrupulous dealership on Long Island. After the repair was done I sued the Dealer And Toyota and recovered $2,750 in damages.

But normally when we see a failure, we also find the valve lash closing up, maintaining that is one key to preserving the head gasket.

That early laminated head gasket technology just didn't work very well, other models like the NEON also suffered from the same concerns.

The later gaskets like the steel lined piece Toyota and some aftermarket suppliers offer have shown to be better. Still, aluminum head on an iron block, the gasket is sensitive, all bi-metal engines have this concern.

I can say that we now have more concerns getting the new design gaskets to a customer (what with the Gorillas UPS hires...*LOL**..) in one piece than failures in the field.

The problem really is less now, plus the new hi-grade bolts seem to be helping, too.

The 3V isn't like changing a gasket on a 22RE. That takes 90 minutes to 2 hours. The 3V wipes out a whole weekend...*EB
