1st Gen 4runner Advise

I'm looking into getting one for some wheelin and as a project. Can some one give me any advise on these trucks such as which engine and tranny combo is best and what are the areas of concern. I know nothing and am trying to learn. Thanks in advance

Oh yeah I know about the 85 and the solid front lol

22RE and W56 Five speed transmission, non turbo. Take your time and look around for a good one and you should be fine. Some people would reccomend the turbo but I'd stay away from it especially in the older trucks as it could be just one more expensive thing that could break. Also, look for an sr5 model which has power windows, doors, etc. Make sure the rear window works because it can be a pricey fix.

I'm kinda partial to the 1st gen 4Runners.

4crawler has some good 411 in his link above.

Let us know if we can help you with the parts when you get ready for that "project" as we are sorta close, Tuscalooa, AL.

Welcome to Yotatech!

I would actually suggest looking for a non-SR5 and adding what you want. I don't like older vehicles with power windows (especially for wheeling). I got the DLX model and bought an SR5 cluster and clino and some other stuff. That's up to you though. Second on the 22R-E and W56 5 speed. Check for rust along the frame near the rear spring mounts.
