Need Help. I swapped my spent 22r for a new 22r with Street RV head on my 86 4x4 ext cab but when I crank the newly installed engine, oil pours out the back at the bell housing. I would estimate oil flow rate out of the truck onto the ground at 1qt every 5 seconds. Oil does not leak when the engine is off, only when it is cranking. What in the world could cause this? There is a rear main installed and it looked great when the engine went in. All help is very much appreciated!

 

rear main seal would leak from bottom of bell housing. The top of the bell would either be the half moon seal or the plate on the back of the head.

 

That was my first (grumpy) thought when I saw the oil pouring out, but I have never heard of a bad rear main straight from the engine shop. Is there [I]any[I] other option??

 

Sounds like they didn't even put IN a main seal!

see that hole to the right of the rear main? that is the main oil galley, there is supposed to be a pipe plug in it...

thats the one, but if that one is missing it could mean that whoever put it together could have left some other ones out which would not leak on the outside but on the inside of the engine and you would have little or no oil pressure, its been awhile since i rebuilt my 22r but there is a plug on the bottom of the block close to the oil pan rail, and there is one behind the timing cover, if your not sure if these were put in i would strongly recommend to pull the pan and see if its there, otherwise the engine bearings will be starved for oil and it will cause catastrophic damage

i can remember 3, but there may be more, just make sure you have a mechanical oil gauge when you starting/cranking, when i was priming my rebuilt 22r i was getting about 20-40 psi when cranking with the spark plugs out....

 

Note to self: do not use long-haul's engine shop!

No Kidding! No surprise what my day is looking like-- separating the tranny from the motor and installing that galley plug off the old block (thank goodness I hadn't turned it in yet!).

What is the best (read: easiest) way to separate the tranny from the block? Looks like 4 12s holding the front driveshaft, slide the shaft to the side, unbolt the bell and let 'er rest on the torsion bar? Is that even a good idea?

My wife is gonna love this on Mother's Day-- hope she likes the brisket I've been all night cooking.
