Confused fuel gauge

It seems that my fuel gauge is having problems reading lately. It will typically read just fine when the tank is full or near full, then as the fuel level drops some, the gauge will randomly read correctly then fall to zero, then after awhile go back up again. I have my original 84 sending unit and gauge, but am not sure whats causing the problem yet. I am almost suspect of a bad ground or wire somewhere because the gauge does work intermittantly. If the sender is the problem, how is that removed? It doesnt look like the sender is under the secret access hatch under the rear seats, so would the tank need to be removed to check/replace it?

I searched but didnt really find any definate solutions. Any insight or experiences would be great!

Sender at the back end of the tank (on top), unfortunately not under the access hatch. Test with an ohm meter:

Scuba- that thread was very helpful...looks like I will probably have to drop the tank to get anyware on this project. This could prove interesting as I dont think the tank and skidplate bolts have ever been removed.
