In this picture, you can see the head gasket is mangled from a previous timing chain replacement. Can I cut this off, and use it or do I need to change the HG? I plan to remove the whole tube of silicone from the slot shaped space, jst in case it might work its way out over time. There was almost a whole tube of FIPG to patch the HG mess.

The next picture is the crank pulley: Do I need a speedy sleeve for this?


The oil pan is coming off, I am hoping to not drain the fluid when I remove the front differential, is this possible?

#1: Cut the HG off, use FIPG, and DONT OVER TIGHTEN the hidden bolt. Iti will suck it down and break the head.

#2 Pic doesn't really show how deep the groove is, but looks like its time for a sleeve or a new balancer.

You will have to drop the front diff down, or out and though you wont have to drain it, it may be a good idea to just so you know you have new fresh fluid in there.

 

Thanks, I think I will cut the bent stuff off and use the section that has the hole as a washer to prevent bending the head.

The fluid is only a year old, I put synthetic in it a year ago when I got the truck. So I really don't want to have to change it out, but a good suggestion if it was old fluid.

FIPG is Form In Place Gasket sealer.

A year old is old fluid, at least in my opinion. That would have at least 15,000 miles on it for me. That is why I don't really believe in the synthetic oils. People have a false sense of security with them. Even though the viscosity may still be good, contaminants from an internal combustion engine can still be in it. And if your dropping it to change the gasket, then your probably going to end up with contaminants in it by the time your done anyway. And the chances of doing it without spilling it all over the place are pretty slim too. I would drain it if it were me.

Thats what I was thinking.... and that "false" sence of security is a proven to be better for your engine.





The Head should come off in a TG replacment, for that very reason, you now have a hacked HG. Its not that hard to do.. just did mine last month. You can then clean the carbon of the pistons, have the head checked to make sure its still true, and that the valves are good.

 

Same idea, but just meant specifically to act as a gasket. RTV can heat up and reliquify which would be bad in certain areas. FIGP is supposed to stay put once formed
