I've been reading through posts on Aisin hubs and have a couple of questions.

I have a '91 4Runner. If I hit a local junk yard, what model/year of vehicle will work as a donor? Are the Aisin hubs the same on all years of Toyotas, or have they changed over the years?

Also, I've read that some people have noticed an increase in gas mileage with manual hubs. True? If so, that would be great. 10-12mpg just doesn't cut it.

 

Not sure on the years that work, but the mileage increase is for real - just not big. I might have gained 1-2 MPG. I have a lead foot though.

 

Cool. I can handle an extra mile or two per gallon.

I think I answered the other question on my own. Looks like '86-'95 IFS trucks make good donors.

 

I was gonna ask the same question. So the pickups had manual hubs?

I found a set on Ebay that fit '86-'95 trucks and 4Runners. Since 4Runners (at least 2nd gen) come with ADD, I believe they are from a truck. Anybody know any different?

Over here, the Xtra-cab trucks got ADD before the other 2nd gen trucks I believe... eg. my 1990 has ADD, but I think that's because they only came as an 'SR5' model.

Non-SR5 models all seem to have manual hubs.

 

I think this guy is asking to much for his hubs, plus you still gotta pay for shipping. This one's been on ebay for a loooong time. Ask Toyota Parts Dude if he's got any for sale.

 

I got mine off ebay also. I paid 40 or something shipped. The guy I bought them from is always parting stuff out. Let me see if I can find his em addy for you.

 

Sure seems awfully expensive to me - I just looked it up and a pair of Warn Premium hubs is only $125 NEW. Plus there are instructions for rebuilding old ones in the tech section. Doesn't seem like they'd be more than $10-$20 a piece from a junkyard.

FYI...just did a pre-hub install mileage calculation...I'm getting 23.5 miles to the gallon. Keep in mind that a Canadian gallon is 1 quart larger than the US = 18.9 mpg. Stock 91 runner, v6 5spd. No extra weight except the fuel and all highway miles, about 120 miles round trip on my way to work and back, cruise control on and the whole world passing me, as I tried to keep it under 60 mph or 3000 rpm for the whole trip.

I'm looking to get at leat a 1.5 - 2 mpg increase after the hubs are on. I figure the new hubs will have paid for themselves in about 2 weeks of commuting. Thanks Toyota Parts Dude !

 

I bought my hubs from Yotoyard.com for $25ea plus shiping for a total of $72. Repainted them and am happy with the results. All IFS versions of the hubs will work well with the '86 and newer 2nd gen trucks and 4Runners. Pre IFS hubs are different in that the clutch gear and the prawl plate are a tad bigger.
I noticed a big change in rolling resistance but I have not yet settled down and tried for a normal tank of gas as I'm still putting my foot in it up the hill etc.

 

Any IFS pickup or 4Runner from 86-95 will have the right hubs. I got about a 1.7 MPG increase in mileage (about - hehehe) and there is a noticable improvement in steering effort and acceleration.

 

This is definitely a mod you can do on the cheap. That guy on ebay asking $75 is way to much. I just looked them up and the first place I clicked on had Warn Premium hubs NEW for just $125. $75 is to much for used factory hubs.

There are instructions all over the web for rebuilding them. A set of junkyard ones should do fine.

Aisin are much stronger than Warn or Milemarker. By those if they are all you can find - get the Aisin from Yotayard before you go aftermarket. This is one case where the factory definately got it right.
