Mechanical To Electric Fuel Pump?

So I want to change my 82 over to an electric fuel pump from the mechanical one in it.

What's the best way to go about this?

you will have to

A. Get an inline pump, and mount it externally
B. Get an EFI tank, and pump assembly. Then you will also need high pressure line from the tank to the engine.

Also, get a block plate from an EFI engine to cover up where you take the mechanical pump off.

Are you saying that you need 2 pumps? in tank and in line? I have been considering this also.

this isnt exactly my specialty but i am pretty sure you need something that moniters the fuel pressure and regulates the pump. Like on the efi engines the afm is what kicks the pump on when you floor it and it needs more gas.

I want to use an inline pump.
Do I still need a block off plate?

why don't you just leave the mechanical one on and put in a secondary electronically controlled pump in line?

I did this on a rig I had and the thing would run at ridiculous angles as long as I switched on the pump.

just my .02

I want to be able to hook up a kill switch for the fuel. So when I flip it the truck will shut down, good to have if your about to roll or flop.

Plus friend's have had issues with mechanical pumps so I wanted to do away with the thing.

You should still need a block off plate, since you would be removing the mech. pump.

Riiiggghhhhttt...no fuel spilling out onto trail and you at the worst possible time. Good idea but it takes away some of the fun factor doesn't it?

Yea, if you put an electric fuel pump off, you would remove the mechanical fuel pump. One less thing to go bad anyways.

I'll still need to fab a block off plate for the mechanical pump hole though, correct?

I wasn't aware one was sold.
I think it would be cheap/easy to fab though.

EFI engines used a block plate, so one is available through the dealer or at wrecking yards, or you could steal one off a used EFI head.
