I'm looking for some schamatics or parts fichies for the rear axle on my
88' 4Runner. I'm going to regear it. I believe I can just remove my 3rd member and just install the new third right? I have a leak and I was going to look at the parts fichie/schamatic to help me determine where the leak could be coming from and what could be causing it.
I was priced $1,300 to regear my front IFS diff and my rear diff. This includes parts.4.88 gears.I don't want to pay that much. If I can do it why not!
From what I gather the rear isn't that big of a deal. I just want it done right.
I have to fix the leak as well!

 

Taking the third off and putting it back on is no big deal. Putting new gears in it takes quite a bit of expertise, however.....

If you were just going to drop the truck off, $1300 is about right. There's no reason to do that with a 'yota though. Pull the axles yourself, drop the thirdmember and the front diff, and just take them into the shop. Should be about $200/axle that way for labor.

The rear axle seals require a press. I forget exactly what I paid to have mine done - $500 seems to be in the ballpark. Probably could have done it myself, but it's a PITA and I thought it was money well spent.

Note: IMHO if you wheel, you're a damn fool if you don't put lockers in at the same time as the labor is exactly the same so you save $400 on install doing it all at once versus separately. Save up a few more months to get the lockers, just live with your current gearing a little longer.

 

As much as I like DIY people, regearing is not something to mess with with no experence or the right tools. Basicly you would need a bearing press, dial indicator, shims, spanner whench..... basicly stuff that very few people have in their garage. I've seen a lot of people try to set their gear sets up themselves with no way to measure backlash, and I've see some pretty horrible patterns and some bad failures. It is expensive but worth it.

 

It takes some searching, and I am not sure how accurate the part numbers are, but I use this quite a bit and the images look to be factory pics.

I've set up gears in two Dodge rear ends, one was my friends & it went perfectly. One was my own & the gears lasted about one month before they exploded. It's all in setting up the correct shims; do it wrong & you absolutely will destroy the rear end - no question about it.

I could get you a microfiche diagram of an axle similar to yours, but really, the only place you would get a leak at on the pumpkin is from the diff cover seal leaking or the drain/fill plugs.

 

Diff cover? They are welded on diff covers. The third member is removable. The only possible places for a 4Runner/Truck rear axle to leak are:

1.Pinion seal
2.Diff gasket
3.Breather
4.Drain/Fill plugs
5.Axle seals at the end of the tubes (there is 3 per side on your 88)

Usually, its the pinion seal leaking. I had one go out on my way home from Mt. Rainier once, and it sprayed gear oil all over the back of my truck. THAT was fun to clean up.

 

My bad...I never had to worry about my diff and instead imagined a dodge truck diff. Sorry 'bout that.

But then which diff gasket are you referring to?

 

I believe it's the Diff gasket,becaus eit doesn't seem to be leaking from the pinion. Don't you love the way that used gearcase fluid smells!
