fuel tank size?

i checked edmunds.com for my 97 4runner limited 4wd and it says 18.5 gallons,

when driving home i would get to just under 1/4 tank left and would fill it full and it would only take 11 gallons then would stop and reads full, is the last 1/4 really that much gas or is something wrong?

Alot of it has to do with the way gas guages are designed.

so that could be a possibility that the last 1/4 tank would make up the rest of the missing gallons

that equates to just under 70L. i've ran it till the needle was below E and the orange light was a constant bright glow..and was still only able to put no more than 60-63L or just under 17 gallons. go figure. maybe the reserve is ~5L or so...but i wouldnt be able to tell if i was anywhere near the reserve.

regardless..its not that big of a tank.

Yeah.... mine gets on the E all the time, with the gas light on all the time, so i fill up and im lucky to get 14-14.5 gallons into the tank

I think it might also have to do with the shape of the tank. Wider at the bottom so when it gets down to the bottom of the tank the tank is wider and holds more gas than the top..... maybe

well i usually fill it up with a lot of fuel left in it... but like 225-250 miles per tank
I could probably get another 50-80 miles per tank

Our tanks are 18 gallons IIRC
(16 Gallons with a 2 gallon Reserve)

Before my gas gauge sensor decided to take a crap on me, I would get down to a 1/4 of a tank and only put in about 11 gallons myself...

But since i am paranoid when I see the needle hit 1/2 I fill up, the bad part about that is since my sensor is broken, I only really lost about 3 gallons. Helps me save on driving but i hate reading mileage, anotehr spring repair I will have to do...

i get about 300km (approx 185miles) per tank. its pretty much 100% city driving, w/ no more than 20-30km/day...so a full tank lasts me about a week.

I drive across washington state all the time. The last time I drove, my Gas Light came on, I drove over 50 miles with it completely on empty with the light on. When I went to fillup it took just under 16.5 gallons. So it would be easy for that last 1/4 tank to consist of seven gallons. My 1990 4runner was the same way.

My owners manual (yes it does have something important in it) shows that my 2000 4runner has an 18.3 gal.

Once the fuel light comes on I usually go about another 50 miles before needing to fill the tank, then I can almost put 18 gallons in..... But things are different since I partially crushed in the tank, now I go about 50 miles after the light comes on and only put 15 gallons in the tank......

I'm having the same issue. I was really wondering if there is 8 gallons left inbetween 1/4 and Empty?

BTW, Do 97 4runner have a Low fuel light? I was on E the other day and didn't see one come on.
