5 speed popping out of fifth. Question

going downhill, coasting, the shifter moves out of 5th gear. Is this going to lead to a problem?

Do you have a body lift or has the truck ever been wrecked hard enough to move the cab? If so, check the clearance around the shifter.

Your shifter bushing and seat may be worn causing this. A simple fix.

Do a search for some info here.

Here's a quick link:

Shifter bushing as previously mentioned is an easy check/fix. MarlinCrawler.com has a great replacement that you won't have to keep replacing all the time (OEM ones suck @$$ for longevity).

This is an interesting thread! My '88 pickup hasn't had any transmission work ever done, so I can only assume from this that my original shifter bushing is long gone, even though everything shifts OK. How hard are these to replace for a mechanical dunce, and how long does it take? It sounds like the hard part is getting the shifter on and off? Is this whole job a 15 minute affair, or the better part of a day? Anything I should know about potential to majorly screw up my transmission (4 speed - W46 transmission)?

Here's a link; it's one of the easiest things you can do on your truck! Maybe take half and hour for a newb...

Thanks for the link - I hadn't seen this one before. Sounds like I need to order the parts and tackle this one of these upcoming weekends.

mine pops out of 1st gear if i don't hold it in. doesn't affect normal driving too much cuz it's only 1st gear. but since i don't have power steering at the moment (long story, my fault, haven't fixed it yet), it SUCKS when driving in parking lots!
