fedora core 6
well, i'm bored, it's late, and i'm waiting for my FC6 install to finish. I haven't had a linux box for about 4 months now and windows is driving me crazy....even with cygwin installed. Luckily, a friend was getting rid of their old desktop (1.4Ghz celeron, 256MB PC100 ram, 40GB HD). I threw in another 80GB HD I had lying around. It's not much, but my last linux box was a 400Mhz celeron with 64MB of ram running redhat 9.0, so this is a step up (or at least the right direction).
After the install, next will come setting up apache, mysql, php, perl, ssh, setting up a samba share, etc.
Then I get to take all my current backup scripts (which currently just mirror my data on a different drive in my XP box) and edit them to store the data on the new box.
sorry to bore you all, i'm just sitting here wishing the install would go faster.

Linux is fun to play around with especially once you get it right.
I still have my box lying in my closet...no time to play with it. Conincidentally, I quit when I couldn't get printer sharing figured out (samba!).
Oh well...one day

i used linux solely for about a year.
now i am back to xp. problem is i have too many gadgets. a pda, an mp3 player, my phone, my keyboard, remote, etc, etc. and i like to play games, which is seriously lacking on linux.
dont get me wrong, i love linux, its just not ready for prime time yet.
on the other hand, im about to install it in my carpc
also, since fedora 4, i havent liked fedora. i use ubuntu, worked flawlessly except for the above reasons. gentoo is what im looking to put into my car, since it would be totally custom.

i'm pretty much a redhat junkie....I ran 7.2, 8, then 9.0 on my old box. we're running FC4 and RHEL4 at work. It's like a broken in baseball glove....your hand kinda slips right in.

so my install hung last night installing one of the packages....guess that's what I get for not checking the data on the CD-R's before installing....
Guess I get to try again tonight

Have any of you tried mandriva? Had great luck with one of the older mandrake distros and the current mandriva finally allowed me to shut off my last windows pc. It's the first time I've been able to get VPN to work. I have it on my main pc, and my laptop, working great.
I have an OLD dell optiplex running ubuntu server, it's my firewall/ fileserver.
And the current toys are my 3-4 yr old pc's running ubuntu. They are both going to be MythTV boxes if I can ever finish working out the bugs. Actually the one that is for my step son is about done, trying to make it stream video in a simpler way. He is constantly VNC'ing into it from college to show it off.
Sean, in the past I've had issues getting things to work on linux, but other than different wifi cards most things work better for me on linux than XP anymore. Just one example is my step sons microsoft blue tooth keyboard and mouse. Every reboot in XP he has to go through the new hardware found wizard for each of them. When he boots the same laptop into Ubuntu it's one click to run a script he wrote. The sound on my dell laptop is another thing. Worked out of the box under mandriva, but I cannot find the correct drivers off the dell site to make it work in XP. When they replaced the MB they used a diff one than it came with.
Geez, sorry for the rant, but my experience is that there are a few things that don't work at all in linux, like shockwave but most things are easier.
