Hillbilly cruise control/hand throttle?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has setup a simple control cable to act as a "manual" cruise control on their truck? I've seen a couple hot rods with a push-button control cable attached to either the carb or gas pedal...push the button and pull to adjust, push to button to release. I can't imagine it would be too safe but...who knows. The aftermarket kits seem like a hassle...

Search around, some manual tranny guys use a hand throttle for rock crawling.

It's a manual transmission. Maybe I could make a kill switch for extra safety

Funny...just yesterday I was wishing I had a cruise control on my '86...M/T. I figured I'd have to have a different ECM for that.

Actually the CC has it's own computer:

Any info on setting CC up on a stock 1st gen (22re)? If the price is right, I would like to do this at some point.

Hand throttle:

Doesn't work that well for a CC, though, unless you are on dead flat roads.

An aftermarket cruise control is probably the easiest to install, I used an Audiovox unit in my daily driver:

Use a bike brake lever tied into your throttle cable.
That's what I've done before and never had any issues.

I've used brake cable for a bike and it's just spliced together so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Thanks a bunch you all! Dead, flat roads are all I'd be using it for, anyway. I have 26mi of highway to get from home to work/town and CC would be just a luxury.

Bike brake lever? The cable I understand, but the lever? I guess I'll have to do some reading. I just don't understand how that works at the moment. This is all news to me! LOL!

Does the bike lever stay locked in position? It doesn't seem like it would be easy to release quickly, and I want something that I don't have to hold in position.

That's what I was pondering. I don't believe it will...effectively. I think it's just for having a "hand throttle" saving your feet for propping up through the window or something...dash, significant other...I dunno. Anthony?

The lever I've got is made by Tektro (the other one is on my BMX). It is spring loaded however it's got an adjuster screw so I can set it to keep the truck at a certain rpm or not.

If you want a Cruise control, your best bet is an aftermarket unit.

I used an old thumb shifter for a bike front derailleur, they type that index the whole way rather than "1, 2, 3". And a length of bike shifter cable and housing. It worked really well actually.

The only thing I noticed is that after a while it started to make my throttle stick a little bit. So I even with the "low friction" cable housing, I still had to put a bit of oil on the cable now and then.

Very nice Curtis. That's a good price, too.

Thanks anyway, Cymon. I don't have that kind of cash right now. BTW, is that for the 3.0 or 22re?

Break lever, thumb shifter!?....wanna hear my idea?...the defunct lever for my heater...lol! Hey, I dunno...fun ideas. I might go for something like that ebay item . I even have a spot just for it on my dash!.....(scratching my beard while pondering the possibilities...)

That'd be pretty cool. although, I hope you live in a warm climate...I use my heater.

You might run into an issue running a cable into the dash though. I used a thumb shifter on the shifter because it was easy to route the cable, and keep it neatly tucked away.

you dont want to use a brake lever off of a bike, you want to use a shifter lever so that it clicks into different positions.
