help! no power to fuel pump

I'm new to the forum and 4runner ownership. I've used the search and advanced search to the best of my abilities. I've found some useful info, just nothing that's helped me with my main problem. I bought a '85 w/22re that didn't run casue of a "bad fuel pump", turns out the pump is fine, it's just not gettin power. I've traced the wiring back to the ECU and and its dead the whole way. Is there something simple that i'm missing? The fuses are good. i just can't think of what it could be. Any help would be great otherwise i'm gonna have to take it to a "professional" and I HATE doing that. Being a Scout guy, I Know next to nothing about these toyotas

Thanks

first, the ECU does not in any way control the operation of your fuel pump.

You have what is known to Toyota as a Circuit Opening Relay. other manufacturers would call this a fuel pump relay. It is located high in the right kick panel area.

The relay is activated first by the ignition switch in the start position. Then once the engine starts, there is a set of contacts in the airflow meter that take over and keep the Circuit Opening Relay on and the fuel pump running.

If the engine quits running then the airflow meter closes and turns off the relay opening the circuit.

there is a connector under the hood of your 4 runner that you can use a jumper to activate the circuit opening relay. Because of the older model of you 4runner I don't recollect exactly the configuration you have so I would recommend doing a search of this forum and a general web search for more specific diagnostic information.

I have just been through all this with my 87 4runner. You can jumper the B(Battery) and FP(Fuel Pump) terminals in the test block by your fuse box under the hood. This bypasses the AFM and CO Relay. The biggest culprit of failing CO Relay is a leaking windshield leaking water down on to it. I had an intermittent problem with starting and fuel delivery. Jumpering the FP and B would not work for me so I made a jumper wire with a clip on one end and connected it to the battery and the FP terminal in the test block to give constant 12V to the fuel pump. The only problem with this was that I was under the hood everytime I started and stopped the truck. After lots of studying of the wiring diagrams and what I was jumpering out I realized that is was the main EFI Relay behind the driver kick panel, well not actually the relay but the main plug for the fuse panel there. I had a hole in the floor from a leaky windshield that was allowing water to spray from my tire on to the connector. I cleaned the connector and welded the hole in my floor. No more problems. I still need to replace my windshield soon.

Good Luck
