91 Speedo cable removal?

Ok 22re almost back together. Tryin to get what looks like a hundred years of goop out of the intake plenum. That and the tranny front seal are all thats left. Also want to put in my nice ebay new SR5 gauge cluster. My problem is that at 6'6" its hard enough to work under the dash to start with, but I can't figure out how to undo the damn speedo cable off the back of the gauge. Can't pull the old one out far enough to see it and can barely smoosh my meat hook up in there. Copied the pic from the post showin how to set the tach and still cant tell how it comes loose. Does it twist off, or got some little tab to squeze or do i just jerk the @*$%# thing out. I'm thinkin the later about now. Thanks for the help.

Should have a tab to release. It is a tight fit in there, I have scraped my hand up pretty good in there.

I did the SR5 swap on my 1988 pickup. If your year is like mine....

I released the speedometer cable from the fire wall bracket to give me more slack. Then I pulled the cluster out as far as it would go and looked through the windshield to see what was behind it. Disconnected the electrical connectors.

Then I reached my hand under the cluster and pushed on the lever thing, and the cluster pops at you when it is disconnected.

Hooking it back up is harder than removing.

Great photo thanks!!! That will help when I get back out there to it. Tried to look at one at the stealership but they didnt stock any. Man I'll tell back in the day they used to screw on sure was a lot easier. Mines a 91 might be the same.

If you get a chance can you take a picture of what the tach connection looks like? I am thinking of adding a SR5 cluster, but am not sure if it has the wiring.

No.

You just push down on the raised tab that my thumb is on. You will be able to feel it with your fingers.

I have a 1988. Do not remember what a 1989 has/does not have.

On my 1988 I had to add a wire for the tach. It was in slot #6 of the blue connector. From there the wire runs through the firewall along the hood release cable to the green thing next to the ignitor.

So I would not get confused, with a green pen I marked slots 1 and 12. Then counted out slot #6.
