2nd-gen harmonic balancer tools

Hi,

I just realized a couple of days ago that I'm going to need a special tool to hold the harmonic balancer while I bring the crankshaft bolt to torque specs.

The FSM for my '92 4Runner lists SSTs 09213-58011 and 09330-00021 as the tools I need. I've figured out that #09330-00021 is the generic handle ("companion flange tool") that attaches to various engine-specific ring-shaped tools, and that #09213-58011 must refer to the ring-shaped piece I need.

I've called SPX/OTC about these... they'll be able to ship the handle at the end of February , which sucks, but what is worse is that the SST# for the ring-shaped piece doesn't show up as valid in their systems at all (and they aren't able to look a tool up by description...).

Does anybody have an updated SST# for this tool for the 3VZ-E? Any other ideas about how I can track this information (or the tool itself!) down?

That would be awesome... do you have a part # or a link or anything? All I've seen there are pullers for the harmonic balancer, but if they have a tool for installing them that would be really sweet.

You should be able to get it pretty tight with an impact gun, then use the torque wrench after it's installed in the truck. That's what I did and it worked fine. No special tools required. The driveline held it easily. It seems that removing it is the difficult part, not replacing it.

I hear that works with a manual (tranny in 5th gear & wheels blocked) but if you have an auto it doesn't. BTW the torque spec for the crankshaft pulley bolt is 181 ft-lbs for the 3VZ-E and you don't want that to loosen up down the road.

The 22RE has the same torque spec and mine was a manual. I would have to think it would still work with an auto though. It's still only 180 pounds. BTW, mine was in 1st with the ebrake on and no chocks on a smooth garage floor and it didn't even try to budge.

Yet another reason to not buy an automatic...

Oops, sorry... no, I have an MT. Whether or not this technique would work on an automatic, I fully expect it should work fine for my needs.
