new tires for 1st gen
well everyone i have the money now and i guess its time for new tires (maybe wheels also) for my 1st gen 85 4runner. i have no lift so i think 32 is going to be as big as ill be able to go, maybe later after i get a lift and maybe a wider rear axle ill get bigger tires but for now id just have to do too much to put on 33s or larger (regearing, lift, wider rear axle).. so im wondering what people think i should get. i live out here in az so im leaning towards the goodyear mt/r. my wheels are 15".. im not sure if theyre 15x7 or 15x8. anyone have any suggestions on where to buy these tires or if these are any good. thanks for your time

31" is the max on a non lifted 1st Gen without having to pound down the inside body seams, I bought 30"s and they're fine, but I'm rarely offroad since. Glad you are considering that your gearing is going to show some lag at 31" and up, uphills on the highway will be annoyingly slower, 5th gear may become useless altogether. Stock rims would be 15 x 7", they will handle offroading. There's a few sets of used tires here from time to time, http://www.4x4wire.com/cgi-bin/ultim...ubb=forum&f=15
Got my 30" BFG AT/KO's for $300 almost new and local. If you recent had cash flow issues then hold out for a deal and pay for the important stuff first. I'm probably the king cheapskate of 4runners.
BTW, Yotatech here has probably the best quality write ups, friendliest posters, but only a few 1st gens, mostly 2nd gen and up here. Lots of great interior mods and a broad geographical cover though.

I'm not sure I'd put 32's on right now. I removed my front swaybar (a good cheap trick) for better suspension flex. It helps keep the wheels on the ground and feels more stable that way. It also lets the tires stuff into the fenders farther and my 31x10.50's used to rub often. I've since trimmed enough out of the way so that they don't. I'd rather go with a smaller tire so that they have lots of room to stuff into the fenders and aren't so hard to turn. A big tire on a truck that isn't set up for it (clearance, gears, etc.) just makes it gimpier. Your truck will be more capable on a smaller tire that it can manage better.
I'm running 31x10.50 and I keep thinking about going smaller so they're easier to turn/steer/stuff. In my opinion an inch or so of ground clearance doesn't make up for a clumsy truck.
