fuel pump replacement questions

Can anyone recommend a good manual for fuel pump replacement (and/or overall repair)? From what Ive gathered from other threads its not terribly difficult...Im no mechanic by any means but can usually follow a manual to the tee.. anyone think its a bad idea for a novice? thanks, yall have always been super helpful

If you want a really good manual get the factory service one from the dealer, they're not cheap though. The Chilton and Haynes are OK, but seem to be lacking in some areas.
A fuel pump is not difficult, just undo all the wires and hoses from the tank and drop it out of the truck. Obviously the less fuel in the tank the better. Some have a drain plug, but if not a gallon or 2 doesn't weigh much.

You didn't say what engine you have, but here are the manuals for the 22RE and 3.0. If you don't have either of those engines, you will have to get a manual.

It's really easy on the 4runner... I *think* the truck requires that you drop the tank.

Nay says the man that's fought his tank a couple of times! (that'd be me)

It depends which 4Runner we're talking about. On a 3rd gen you start with pulling an access panel in the floor of the left rear so that you can pull the electrical and get one of the lines off. Then you get to drop the tank.

On a 1st gen 4runner, you can get to it via access panel also...
The truck, I'm not so familiar with.

Torque question for fuel pump replacement

well they say no question is a bad question, while this one may not be bad it may be a bit dumb. Anyhow, im about to replace a fuel pump on my 94 4wd 22re reg cab (pics soon), and after studying the manual on the reinstall I am wondering how important it is to follow the torque specs for pump install/fuel tank reinstall, or should I just worry about getting things as tight as I can.

Don't tighten them as hard as u can because u will probly end up snapping a bolt or 2.

the way it works is to keep adding to your original thread vs creating multiple threads. it keeps it neat for you and provides other people reading or replying your thread from searching multiple threads

my 93 4runner had to drop the tank and driveshat to get the tank out not to bad tho my fuel pump mounting bracket was rusted to ?…?…?…?… so replaced that also

Finished the fuel pump job, all is well.... thanks again, yotatech is a fantastic thing, since I cant contribute too much wisdom Ill gladly contribute a little bread. The help from this site saved me around 300$. Everyone who helped, you all rock.

FOr you 2genner 4runner's, Cut a hole for the pump to come out of insted of dropping the tank, Its easy to sealback up.
I did mine an put a bad pump in from the stealer that had taken me 6 hr by myself, tank did not want to come out or go back in.
I decided to cut the floor under the passenger seat and it only had taken me 30 min to cut and replace the pump. (Use tinsnips)
To seal it up you can use thin sheetmetal or I used Superheavy tinfoil and silicon, The carpet holds in place perfectly and thers no chance of damage because of the tank being so close to it.
If you drop the tank, You will hate yourself if you damage that weatherd filler tube.
