22re cylinder heads pre vs post '84

Hello all. I was just wondering if anyone here knows if a pre '84 cylinder head will match up with a '94 trucks exaust and intake manifolds. I know the heads are different but I don't know if the bolts line up. I have an opportunity to pick up an '81 22r engine and I am not sure if I can swap it with my '94 22re with just a manifold change. Thanks.

The short answer is no. The heads on pre 1985 22REs are different than 85 and up. They have different deck heights, and different quench areas because the 84 and under ones had domed pistons. The exhaust ports are different as well. It may actually bolt on but it won't work.

The block also has a different deck height. The crank and rods are the same however.

Hope that helps.
