I have an 86 4runner, 22re 5 speed. My cat was stolen, is it necessary to replace and what is recommended?

Bummer dude, those are worth big bucks at the recyclers (I got $140 cash for my old stock cat).

Some states are stricter than others, but I'd think an after-market Carsound cat would do in most states. I got one on ebay for about $60.

Damn....why would someone steal your cat? Thats pretty messed up. I used to run my civic without a cat, until it was time for the annual inspection, I would slap one on for it, then pull it off when they were done. Ya.......but I'm pretty sure its a federal law that you must have a cat.

i'd go look on ebay for a high flow model.

there were a rash of catalytic converters stolen here in maine from a number of used car dealerships at night a few months back.

That's funny.. I gave mine away for $10 + shipping to a kid that needed it.

(I went to a high flow version, I didn't remove it)

Dont spend to much, all your going to do is make it harder, not impossible. Remeber you have to get under there sometimes too.

A cheap cordless sawzall and its out in 2min.

If you come up with something let us know. I was talking to an exhaust shop about ways to protect it and he said there wasn't much you could do. He said the theives have very good cutting tools and hack up lots of stuff getting them out. He said one lady had her torsion bar half way cut in two, some have lost O2 sensors too. They'll just take a big chunk of exhaust with them and run.

I guess we'll just have to wire in some explosives

platinum is most common, with some using palladium or rhodium

I see that ou are in California...and so your best bet would be to go to a muffler shop and get one that's STATE Legal. Otherwise you wont pass smog on the visual or through the readouts!!!! This has been a common occurance lately with 2 people I know having there's stolen as well. Bummer man! But get it fixed, go high flow but make sure it's Legal in Cali.

In oregon where I live, I dont need one, on the 87 runner I left the cat off, but if I needed to pass smog, I would get an aftermarket 50 dollar one and call it good, now if the rig has any oxygen sensors after the cat, then yes, put one back in.
