Intermittent starting

im thinking it may be the fuel filter (94 pu4wd 22), which I can do myself, but beyond that its bend over for the mechanic time. Does anyone know (which Im doubting to be the case) if a clogged fuel filter would result in the rig firing up, then stalling, then not firing up at all (but turning over strong) then magically starting again (and not starting again most recently)? anyhow, Im glad to be back on the winning team after a couple of painfull years with a subaru-thanks
