Well I tried to feel for that slight play when pushing and pulling in the direction of the axle when the tire was on but didn't notice a damm thing....only when i took off the wheel did i feel some slight play in the axle.

So im guessing this means i need new bearings pressed on?

Also I think i can still reuse my drum shoes since there wasn't any oil on them at all

from what I see in the pictures, your seal wasn't leaking, so I doubt your bearing is bad. what problem are you experiencing that you needed to take it apart?

 

hey Bruce the problem was i could smell gear oil and i could also see some of it leaking out near the studs.

I did find some gear oil on the mounting hardware for the brakes but they didnt get on the shoes yet.

Im thinking the bearing is bad since there is some thick looking grease that seems to be all around the bearing as if it seeped out, is it suppose to be like this?

Ive never seen a sealed bearing fail so im not sure if its normal or not.

You may have gotten it right at the onset. Most of us are not that lucky.

 

Even though a bearing is "sealed", there is still room for gear oil to go through it and wash out the grease. That looks like grease from your bearing in the pictures, so I wouldn't expect your bearing to last as long with some of the grease missing. I have not taken mine apart yet to inspect (although I have to because my seal was leaking gear oil when my rear axle breather was clogged... prior to me extending it), but I was hoping it might be possible to inject more grease into it with a needle type fitting on the grease gun. Can't say for sure though, but look into it. If you caught it early enough, your bearing should be fine if you can somehow get new grease into it. Otherwise, replace the bearing, or wait until it fails and replace it then. It's only $100 or so.

 

I just had my left rear bearing go bad on mine. I mean bad. somehow the metal casing that holds the ball bearings broke and it was completely trashed. i pulled that axle and took it to various repair centers and always got the same answer. Only the dealership could do it. apperently, you have to have special tools to press it in and out. It ended up being 200 with labor and parts. ( and this was with a discount on parts since i knew someone that worked there.) mine also leaked through to the drums. so i imagine that gsgallant is right that it will eventually go out. good luck

 

I don't really think you should be waiting for it to fail...if you know it needs to be replaced, replace it. What happens when that bearing destroys itself at 70mph on the freeway?

 

There will typically be warning signs before a bearing fails (such as noise), but good point.

 

The "only the dealership can do it" line that they gave you is a load of crap. It's a DIY project if you have a press and a few pieces of scrap metal. Toyota "Special Tools" are quite often very easy to make.
