Hi all
I've looked and looked for some threads about Skid Row skid plates for 4th gen Tacos, none to be found.

Any opinion out there in 'Taco land' about Skid Row products? How do they compared to Bud built?

I just want to tell you that your not the only one, I seriously looked at a skid row set for my 04 D-Cab... $$ is the issue, so I am running withut one for now.

 

I just picked up a BudBuilt skid for my 99 taco for $150 bucks not even mounted yet and already painted up. I haven't got it mounted yet but damn this thing is frickin heavy duty. It looks like it is very well made. Can't wait to get it on the truck and bash it.

 

BudBuilt... He does AMAZING work. I never thought that you could be impressed by "just" a piece of bent steal plate - until I saw this.

 

agree...he even has a convenient oil drain hole. I love the way the skid looks...this thing is beeefy!

 

I've bought 3 skid plates from BudBuilt. I really like them but i have to admit, i'm liking the Skid Row plate more...slightly less wieght, improved mounting, and two drain holes are appealing.

 

Never seen the SR plate other than what is on the site you linked for us. It looks nice. The SS cutout in the front again looks nice but I would probably dent it because it is on the ramp section of the plate.

The drain holes are a good idea on both plates but it is my experience that no matter how hard you try to be carefull not to spill oil I always seem to anyway and then end up taking the plate off anyway. Just the oil drain plug is not too bad it is the filter that gets me.

I like my Budbuilt. In fact I beet on it this past weekend again. I know this plate will not fail me period.

That and Bud is such a good guy to work with. And a YT contributing member also.

 

This is the only post I've found mentioning Skid Row plates

SR offers 3 plates, forward, trans, and trasfer case. Budbuilt only offers forward and trans from what I can see. How far back does the BB plate go? Does the 3rd SR plate cover more? I've looked at both web sites and honestly the pictures leave much to be desired, especially SR.

For the guys who are using BudBuilt, have you had a chance to compare SR to BB side to side? Are there any differences? Looks to me like they both use the same material and construction methods. The SR transfer case plate mounts up to the frame to eliminate the need for a cross member as far as I can tell.

I'm planning to get a set in the next week or so. Leaning toward SR due to (my perception) the set of 3 offers more protection overall.

 

yeah, I'm also interested in 1/8" thick custom skids, i think someone mentioned they had one made up from budbuilt that way... maybe they will post...

 

I love my budbuilt skid, its so beefy and I dont worry about the front end getting messed up now. I would go with the Bud Built plate.

 

Budbuilt makes a beefy product that can take quite a bit of beating, but since my rig is a DD I try it keep the weight down, so I run an 1/8" skid plate, it's all banged and bent up, but has prevented any damage.....

I bought BudBuilt for my crossmember...which is a skid for my duals.

 

So nobody has ever seen a Skid row skidplate?

 

I recently munched my stock front skid plate on my Tacoma and I'm in the same boat.. Skid Row or BudBuilt? (or AllPro.. etc etc)

I understand BudBuilt offers a completely flat belly skid plate? Anyone have experience with that?

..I am a little iffy about no frame support though.

 

I have, I bought the Tranny and Transfer Case skid for my '00 4runner they are beefy the tranny one weighs like 35+ pounds and the TC one about 20 or so, I have only installed the Tranny one thus far, direct bolt on to the existing holes on my 4runner, the TC one I have to modify cause on my 4runner their is just holes where its suppose to bolt on and no threads or a nut to get. I'm thinking that the Tacoma Frame has these in place and the 4runner not, or maybe just my 4runner did not come with them. I'll figure it out when I get some time.

I thought I'd add some facts for the record and future searchs. Our belly pan goes to the second crossmember on a 4runner and ends there( right in front of the gas tank) There is no second crossmember on a Tacoma, so we offer a bolt in one. The pics are all on our front page, below the FJCrusier skids. $450 for the 4Runner combo, $500 for the Tacoma combo. They all bolt in, no drilling or welding required.

As far as how far back they cover, it is 26.75" back from the factory crossmember. The SR one is about 12". In this pic of my truck, you can see the dual cases well covered too.
