Is this gap supposed to be here?

Sorry for the vague topic title, but I didn't know how else to describe it.

I was wondering if if this gap near the windshield is supposed to be there. It seems to run across the entire 4runner from side to side, but I cannot be sure because I could not get in very close:

The reason I am asking is because I have this high-pitched sound that I hear in front of me. It only happens when I drive around 80mph or when it's really windy. I started a separate topic on it (https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/strange-high-pitched-sound-57587/) some time ago, but started this new one because it might be a new or separate problem.

Thanks for the advice.

-Matt

Take a piece of vacuum tube or other tube and put it up to your ear and the other end near this gap. Take a friend on a ride with you on the freeway and have him listen. It is really easy to isolate noises with this method.

Have you checked your doors weatherstripping, sun roof, grill, bumper, lights, undercarriage, seal around windshield, wipers, and engine bay for any foreign objects, looseness, etc.?

5 bucks says the sound is coming from the door seals... take post#2's advise and see if you can pinpoint it in this area.

When i drive 80+ Mph, my 4runner has wistles. It's the same kinda Wistle u hear in ur house durring a hurricane or real windy storm. I think it's just cause it's a big somewhat boxy vehical doing 80 MPH.

My 97' Runner dosen't make that noise at 80MPH
But stepdads 02' Runner does, cause his weather striping around the door is comming loose...

I think it might be your weather strip around that area...

I was able to get a recording of what it sounds like using my cell phone. I just wanted to see what you guys thought and compare it to what you've heard before:

http://www.filefactory.com/file/00c5dd/

The file host has a bunch of ads everywhere, but look for the download link in the middle of the page in blue text.

Yea I need to find time to start really investigating this problem. I checked out the black stripping that goes around the windshield and didn't see anything unusual. But I haven't checked out everything else. I think I will take apart the dash using one of the write ups here. I'm gonna use rocket's post as a checklist and see if I can find the problem. Thanks for the help because I have a plan now.
