wierd front end noise

wierd front end noise

i got a 88 runner...stupid me driving with the hubs locked on the freeway half snow half clear.....i was doing 60k not in 4wd but i had the hubs locked and heard a hiddious dddddddd sound..... so i slowed down and the sound went away...i sped up and went 2k and there the sound was again front driverside wheel...what the f***. slow down unlock my hubs ,no problem....get to work check my hubs ,no crap in them.....
hubs locked 2wd = intermitten sound comes and goes
hubs locked 4wd= same thing
2wd unlocked hubs= no sound
4wd unlocked hubs= no sound
oh yeah i changed my diff oil, no shavings or chunks
please help

sounds like spindle bushings. mine do the same thing. check w/ toyota because there is a service bullitan that replaces the inner bushing w/ a needle bearing that will elemenate the noise for good. unless it goes bad!!

The cold weather brings them out. Dont do the needle bearing. I explained why in my lengthy post under "spindle lubricator"

my truck does the same thing, i kinda forgot about it over the summer and was wondering how hard is it to fix that?

Yo I Got a tech write up coming up on how to lube the spindle bushings if you aren't as skilled as our buddy Toyota MDT Tech. Its a little more involved than a spindle lubricating tool, but it will get the job done. As soon as I can get some pictures on my computer of how I was suggesting doing it, I'll write it up for everyone who wants to know!

Also, it sounds alot like those spindle bushings to answer the question. I fought with those things for 9 hours trying to put the needle bearing in, and in the end, I just lubed them and they work,
