I drove our 93-4WD PU to the store, parked it, shopped (for about 15 min) and it won't start. I have lights, ignitions buzzer, radio, etc. When the key is turned, the only sound is a clicking in the passenger kickplate, and only when the key is initially turned. The starter is not turning.

The truck starter was replaced approx. 1 year ago, as well as the battery. We've cleaned the connections at the battery and checked connections on the starter. Any othre suggestions?

This truck was purring like a kitten with no other obvious problems.

Hate to say it but it sounds like your starter, even though it's only a year old. Same symptoms as my truck when the starter was bad. Just for ˟˟˟˟˟s and giggles, bang on the starter with a screwdriver while you have someone else turn the key. It's worth a try.

And don't assume the starter is OK just because it was replaced a year ago. Assuming it was a rebuilt unit, they may not have rebuilt everything.

 

I'm beginning to have this problem often too, often when it's cold.

Before one trail run with bob200587, Bob's runner wouldn't turn over...old man in a beat up solid axle pickup pulls up and asks what the problem is. Old man mumbles "solenoid", goes out to his truck and grabs an old wooden handle and a hammer. Places the end of handle on the top of the starter, smacks the other end twice with the hammer, tells Bob to crank it up. The 4Runner starts right up.

Used the same trick when mine clicked out in the parking lot a couple nights ago...it's not something to make a habit of, you're going to have to pull the starter and replace the contacts...

 

hitting a gear reduction starter is not good for them at all. it will break the magnents inside a cause more problems later. i did it on my old supra and ended up replacing the whole thing when i could of repaired it.

 

I was just saying to do that to so he could get it home so he can replace the starter.
