89 toy troubles
hello members, first is this is a very good site lots of info.
heres the deal I have a 89 toy 4x4 with a 3.slow that has dropped a rod and locked up tight. Today I found a 88 toy. 4x4 with a 22 manual setup in it that had been rolled over there is not a piece on the truck thats not damaged but the drivetrain looks to be in good condition it also comes with a front axle to do a sas. he asked 400.00 for the entire truck do you all think that I can swap the engine and transmission/transfer case in to my 89...????
Do you all think that this a fair price, and other than changing the ecm and wiring harness how much trouble to make this work?

are you sure its an 88? 85 was the last year for a solid axle. also i would try to start the truck up first and see how it runs. it dont seem like a bad deal at all if the drivetrain is in good shape

well 400 is a lot to me but i have been looking for a replacement for the 3.slow and can not find anything that is in fair condition that is under 1000.00 or more. I have looked at putting in a 4.3 chevy but the adapters and hardware comes to around 700.00 not to amention the cost of the engine.
If the 22 is in fair condition and if the wiring harness will work on the 89 I might be able to get my truck running before the snows flys, for a cheaper than going the other way.
Can anyone tell me if the wiring harness and ecm from the 88 work in the 89? Or will I have to do some mods to get it to work?

I don't know if the wiring harness will plug in but you can always rewire the plugs that go to the chassis wiring or swap everything from front to back. The Motor mounts will need to be moved, so if your not comfortable welding or you don't have somebody that will weld it for you I would pass. I am currently swapping a 22re from a 92 p/u into a 94 runner that had a v6 and my wiring is for the most part the same. I will be able to plug engine harness into the chassis harness via the 3 plugs by the ecu. I have not moved the mounts yet but they need to come a few inches forward and they are at a slightly different angle. After the mounts are moved its a bolt in for the motor/tranny. You will have to swap gauge clusters if you want your tach to work. If your truck had abs then you will have to find powersteering lines from a 22re truck that had abs or make your own. There are other odds and ends you will find along the way but its not that hard of a swap from what I have found so far.
