transmission noise

So, 91 22re 4x4 pickup. Transmission is about 2 years old. It makes noise in every gear except 4th. That includes neutral with the clutch NOT pressed. When the clutch is pressed in any gear the noise goes away. I understand that 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio. Pilot bearing is new.

Any thoughts?

From your description sounds like the clutch release bearing .

When there is pressure on then it does not rattle

Was it replaced when the Transmission was ??

Yes, everything was replaced. Throw out bearing going bad wouldn't stop making noise in 4th gear. I'm thinking input shaft bearing.

If it was the input shaft bearing, it would likely make noise in any and all gears, as the input shaft is always turning unless the clutch is in.

It's more likely to be a bearing or gear on the countershaft, which is loaded in every gear BUT 4th, where the power goes directly thru the input shaft and the mainshaft.

That makes perfect sense. I was hoping there would be a transmission guy on here that would chime in. So, guess it needs to go back to the shop because it was just rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago.

Another question, when I separate the transfer case from the transmission there's fluid in between the two. Is that right? Should it be there?

My best recollection is that oil from the t-case will leak from out of the exposed t-case bearings on disassembly.

Ok thanks. I don't have it out and I'm front of me and couldn't remember if those were sealed or not.

I'm not sure that oil might not come out of the tranny as well. Best to drain both before disassembly.

Yea, I know it comes out of the trans. It leaks from the seal where the case goes in.

you know what the symptoms are, noise in every gear but 4th, pilot bearing is brand new. could this bearing be causing it? seems to me this bearing would be spinning all the time being its on the input shaft. however, you can see from the pictures that the inner race is shot. what y'all think?

That would make a noise alright. Is it the input bearing??

Is it the only bad one??

Maybe it's the lack of side thrust while in 4th that makes it quiet then???

guess so. I'm gonna put that one bearing in it and put it back in. may be a couple weeks but I'll post the results right here.

I realize this has been dead for 6 years, but did you figure out what was going on in the transmission? Min, too, is causing noise in every gear but 4th, as well as neutral with the clutch not depressed.

Yes, changed that bearing and the problem went away.

The countershaft bearings are by far the most common ones to fail. Fourth gear doesn't use the countershaft, which is why the trans is quiet in that gear.
Many sellers, including Marlin Crawler, sell kits with the essential bearings needed. I recommend getting kits that are made up of the Koyo and Naichi bearings. The only bearing that some kits may not include is the rear output used in a 4wd trans.(33350-22010-77 iirc)
It's not hard to rebuild, but I'd recommend a FSM and some select tools. Gear puller set(cheap on amazon) snap ring pliers, calipers to measure, and access to a hydraulic press.
