wireless router troubles

about a month or two ago, i made the move to a wireless router so i can use my macbook throughout my apartment. its a linksys wrt54gs. i set it up with my old desktop. now, i no longer use my desktop, but rather my macbook full time. since the switch, ive found that the internet goes in and out. to remedy it, i can just unplug the router, and then plug it back, and everything works as it should.

does it matter that the router is not hooked up to the computer that i set it up on? if it does, is there a way to set it up on the mac? i tried a couple days ago, but the mac cant run the setup wizard. or, maybe im just an idiot.

First, I would use the desktop to update the firmware on the router to the latest revision. If you go to the Linksys website, there should be a support area with new firmware revisions and instructions on how to do it...

I have the same router and I did need to update the latest firmware.

I have intermittent issues when my 2.4 ghz phone gets a call. Sometimes, I lose my signal all together and other times, it's no issue. I guess it's a good excuse to upgrade to the 5.7 ghz technology for the phones.

Unplug your modem and leave it unpluged for about a min. Then plug it back in. donot touch your router. leave it set just the way it is. Only unplug you modem from current from wall outlet.

This nice thing about the wrt54x series is that it is Linux based and you can flash it with a version that is MUCH better than what Linksys sells you. Do a Google search and you will find HUNDREDS of people who are having the same problems you are seeing. I had them too, but now I am running a non Linksys version of the software and my problems are gone, not to mention that my router learned some new tricks in the process. Currently I am running the "Firmware Version: v4.71.1, Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c" flash.

you can find some good stuff. Make sure if you go this route you leave yourself the option of returning to normal. Read all the info on what you are about to try some of them could leave you a nice paperweight.

In all actuality 900mhz is imo better. The lower the freq the farther it will go through things.

Unless you changed something typing 192.168.1.1 into any type of computer connected properly to your network will get you to the log in page of the router. If you changed the default IP run the network wizard thingy (can not remember the proper Mac name its the one with the tux) and find out what your default gateway is, and type that in to get to your log in.

Your router and modem are losing sync. I personally would flash to the newest firm ware, and go from there. if that doesn't help contact your provider. I had that problem a while back with comcast, but it was on their end.

I get customer with this problem every once and a while. easy enough fixes.

You don't "open" it. You upload it to the router.

Log into the router on wired connection, go to the firmware section, browse to the bin file, then upload it, thus flashing the router.

But, I suggest you read the instructions. If you do this incorrectly, you can "brick" your router, rendering it useless.

The router will reset itself after the upgrade.

Again, I suggest you read over the process. It's well documented and your questions so far, as well was others, are covered there in more detail.
