The last two places I've lived at, I've secured my wireless LAN with a 128bit WEP encryption. It's the only way to go.

In my current building, there's about a dozen local area networks. Only 3 of them are secured, and one of those networks was renamed after a couple of months to "buyyourown". Which I thought was pretty funny.

One of the best ways to protect your wireless is to turn off: broadcast SSID
Use this in combo with other features.

Question if you turn it off, how o you go about adding another computer.? Do you just go in turn it on add the computer. Then turn of the broadcast again.

I say it's their own damn fault for being too stupid to know how to set up a wireless LAN properly. It comes built in on most wireless routers and all you have to do is take a little G2 and read the damned book.

I run mine with 128 bit WEP. ˟˟˟˟ing freeloaders.

It's still there, it's just not being broadcast and thus is not as discoverable. When you add a computer, just type in the SSID like you would normally.

HAHAHA I live in a apt 2 years ago and there where a few open wireless systems
I used the 4 that had the best signal when I moved out as my final F-OFF to the little jerks I locked them out and changed the names of two of the routers too
I THINK NOT, NOT A CHANCE
I hated that apt started out as a nice place to live then changed hands and the new land lord let anyone in and it went down hill.
was all grad students then the new land lord started to rent them out to any joe schmo he could get to rent to.

Sadly my apt complex is going the way you described. Last year it was mostly grad students, this year more underclassmen. Its come to a point where I have the cops on speed dial.

128bit WPA-PSK encryption here I do broadcast my SSID, but I have ways of finding out if anyone is even remotly thinking about using my network. And oh boy do I feel sorry for them...

Word... wpa-psk is much more secure IMHO. I broadcast mine only because for some odd reason, even though I have the network set up on my PSP for locationfree, with the broadcast SSID turned off it won't recognize the network... I used to hack into peoples networks/computers, but never did anything malicious. I just like to journey. I never wanted to nor did I ever save anyone's personal info... the thing that was most fun to me was just being able get into "secure" areas.
