wireless is driving me crazy

I have a linksys B wireless router and comcast cable internet.

Lately it works for about 10 min and then it will stop working.

the signal strengh is exellent, speed is 11 Mbbs, my network shows up on the wireless list. Then when I click on reconnect, it is unable to establish a connection. Then I'll run back to the modem and the router, and unplug both. Wait a minute, plug in the modem, then when all four lights light up I plug in the router, and then everythign will work fine again for about 10-20 min. Then it will stop working and the cycle repeats itself.

Do I need to go get a new router, or is there something I need to go reset? Or is there somethign wrong on comcasts end.

Hmmm... you need to isolate where the problem is. The next time this happens, try just resetting the router. If that doesn't "fix" it, then reset both, and the _next_ time it happens, try JUST resetting the modem.

Once we figure out which one is at fault, we can figure out more. (my bet is that it's the modem, the modem on my DSL line does similar things).

Is the network ONLY wireless, or do you have a wired node as well?

You might also need a firmware update. But you do need to isolate the problem as midi said. I've found an easier way to do it is to just plug your machine up to the modem and browse for 10-20 mins and see what happens. That'll tell you whether it's your router or not.

If it's the router, update your firmware. Find your model here:

and follow the instructions.

Cable modems sometimes act this way when overheating. Like Mark said, try your setup with just the cable modem to determine if it is working properly.

EDIT: What type of cable modem is it?

linksys does make a good product if you buy one thats not defective. I sell those at work all the time and we get them returned all the time because they just dont work. since its a b router im guessing its not new...talk to linksys and try to get a warranty replacement. If you can't do that pickup a new router

you might try a diffrent channel on the wireless... if your sharing it with another wifi point you might be having conflicts and it boots you off...

I have the main computer hooked into the router in addition to the laptop on wireless.

Need model # too.
A lot of modems are no longer compatible with Comcast.
I just went throgh this a few months back.

Good connection, then it would cut out, come back, loose it again.
Narrowed it down to an antique modem.

Installed a new Motorola 5100 Surfboard, now I get close to 9 megabit service while paying for 6, and it never cuts out.

Do you have to buy your cable modem from the company which supplies your cable service, or will any modem work? I was wondering if your cable provider puts specific settings into your modem or that's all done on their end and any modem will work.

They do "cap" the modems to limit bandwidth. I'm not sure how they do it, as some do it on the head end of the ISP... in other words, you can't do anything about it. Read up on uncapping your modem here: http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/

Any modem will work. I bought my Surfboard from Best Buy when they were having a rebate deal on signing up with Comcast. After the rebate, the modem was free, and I got a $75 gift card for Best Buy. Score! So yeah, any modem will work. They block modems via their MAC address, so if you buy a new one, you'll have to get the MAC address registered.

Heres a quick test you can do
Once the connection is made, Go into adminnistrator tools/component sevices and click services, down at the bottom find (zero wireless configuration) click stop
and wait and see what happens, If it drops you have to restart or reset machine or windoze doesnt try to reconnect.

2 things happen sometimes in windoze, 1. windoze likes to seekout new connections and can cause disconnetion. 2. Low level reception spikes can cause same thing.
Ive had a few wireless B's that had have this done sometimes
Also keep the semi-line of site clear of flourecentlights, wireless phones and picturetubes.
