Got a wierd problem on my desktop. its running windows 98SE windows 6.0
My wife can open up yahoo and msn messenger and converse with friends but when she tries to open up a website from our favorites list, the computer freezes up. i ran a disc scan aand spybot and no problems were found. i ran stopzilla and found 286 potential problems and got those fixed. ran a virus scan and found nothing. Any help would be appriciated. Oh and I am online with roadrunner.

Paul, to be honest, my recommendation would be to upgrade your operating system since you are still running 98 and now experiencing problems. If you have been running an operating system for a long time, it is going to get buggy-even if it is XP. Windows 98 is not being supported any more, and it is getting harder for it to run some things.
I recently switched from 98 SE to Windows 2000 Professional when I upgraded my computer. I was starting to have problems running things like Quicktime with Windows 98. Heck, I'm even finding Windows 2000 is not being supported any more-like for the new Internet Explorer 7.
If it is only a problem with Windows 98 and you want to try a quick fix that will not hurt one way or another-try Firefox for a browser. Unlike IE7, Windows 98 can run it. I downloaded it and it will import all your bookmarks. I'm using it now.

I would definately consider upgrading. Heck, I am already running Vista Ultimate, and oh boy do I love it. Took a while to get used to it and appreciate it, but it's all good.
The truth for you is that if you have been running Windowns 98 all the way through 2000 and XP, I'd suggest just doing a 'repair' install of 98 (which will keep your current files and settings, but fixing the OS a little to hopefully get rid of your problems) until Vista is officially released to the public January 30, 2007 and then picking up XP for the bairgain price you'll be able to find it.

If your staying with 98 I would right click on the E to get out on the internet. Choose Properties, from there clear out the cookies and Temp internet files. My guess is, your computer is setup to hold so much Temp files, when the file that holds them fills up, it has no place to store "more new pages". So the internet it not working, email don't use that file. So it still works.
Of course it could be a lot of other problems....but I would start there. Delete the temp files to create more room. Once done power off the computer, not just restart, shutdown and power up. Then try the net.

Well, it turned out that my computer was badly infected with spyware, malware, trojans and viruses. Apperantly one of these caused my firewall to totally block the internet. So my virus protection through my cable company and Spybot missed all of this stuff. The guy who fixed it installed another virus protector and antispyware program that found all the stuff that was messing up the computer. They are Pest Patrol and NOD32 Antivrus. The computer is working great now. I also downloaded Pest Patrol on my laptop and found 39 infections that spybot missed.
