I use Microsoft Movie Maker on a regular basis. See if you have it in your programs list. Once you are finished with your "project," you can easily convert it over to a Media-friendly application, which I like. You can add tunes, titles, fades, transitions, and special effects (such as film age, which is cool).

I've tried a few programs I found through google, including some trial versions. All of them have to convert the mov file to avi or wmv before they can do anything to it and in the process they recude the quality horribly.
