Usb 2.0

I bought a Dell server and converted it to a desktop. I know that it has USB 2.0 capabilities, but I don't have the driver.

When I setup the computer, I installed the 875P chipset drivers and it still doesn't work.

I am trying to run my SanDisk usb drive, when I plug it in it says "high speed device in a non high speed port"

Any ideas on what I need to do to get this to work?

Specs:
400 SC
2.4 P4 H/T 800FSB
512 MB 400mhz DDR RAM
40 gig Seagate HD
60 gig WD HD
Running XP Pro

This may help:

http://www.aaltonen.us/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8

If I read that right. there are USB 2.0 ports separate from the USB 1.1 ports.

But, there's also a Q/A that says something a bit different:
Q. Does the motherboard support USB 2.0 on all ports?
A: Yes. ...
And! There's a link on that page to updated drivers... Including USB.

umm ya sounds easy doesn't it. But I am running the same copy of XP on my laptop and desktop, so it won't let me download it again..

Dell won't support it since it was made to be a server. :pat:

Hey Travis... Any new info?

fwiw, I'm looking at buying one, so I may soon be sitting right there with you.

I do have two new pieces of info for you...
  • I hear that in order to get the USB 2.0 stuff to work, you have to buy a new front bezel from Dell. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but it came from a reliable source. I'm working on getting more details and confirmation.

  • There are MB drivers from Intel that may help:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...p?Prod_nm=875p
(I think this is a new link versus one nested in the above links)

I'll keep you in the loop if I decide to join you!

Mark,
Are you looking at the 400SC that is listed on slickdeals for $298?
If so, go for it, it is a damn good computer.

The front bezel that comes with the server is covering 2 usb ports and a headphone jack. The USB ports are wired and ready to go, the headphone jack is not wired. I ordered a wire for $5. I just cut a hole in the front of my bezel and can use the 2 usb's now.

Here is a little secret. Buy 512 mb 400MHz ram, then contact dell to do a authorized return, they will actually buy the 128 mb of ram back from you! I got $68 for my ram! If you don't need the hard drive, they will also buy it back. I ended up using the 40 gig seagate HD that came with it and installed a WD 60 gig HD that I had in my old computer. The total I have spent on this computer is just over $200. I am going to buy an AGP video card soon, then it has everything I want.

I am waiting for a new XP Pro from my friend that has a key that isn't being used. After that, I am sure it will work.

Let me know if you have any questions about the 400 SC

I think I already downloaded this driver, I will have to check when I get home. Thanks!

Yeup, that's what I'm looking at.

Interesting kick on the RAM buy-back, that's a nice little boost.

Argh... I REALLY should do this.

Thanks Travis!

Not everyone that has called Dell was able to get a RA#. I did via the email route and had no problems.

The 400SC won't allow you to mix a 128mb and 512 mb ram stick together at 400MHz, it will kick it down to 333MHz, so the ram is going to be worthless anyways.

Can't you just download the Network Installation version of SP1. Yes it is a much bigger download this way(134MB) but I dont think you'll have problems with the registration/activation this way. Dunno know enough about that last part....

Oh...wow. You mean an internal auto-update from work or online?

Can you do me a favor? Head to Control Panel | System and tell me what build that is? I'm curious about something I heard in another forum.

this system I built, what do u need to know? sp2 came from the microsoft update page. It's a legal copy "sort of" so I already have the updates. somewhat of a guinee pig. That why the reports say alot of the security fuction conflict with alot of things. I'd get one update one day my system woul act funny and lock up a couple time. a day or so later I'd get another update and the sytem would run fine. Now that the bug are just about worked out there finally releasing it
