router problems
ok we have 3 computers running off of 1 modem @ my house, now i know that you cant actually do this, we have a D-Link Broadband Ethernet Router.... well, recently, its acting up and I dont know what to do to fix it, or it jsut doenst like my computer..... the 2 otehr computers we have run fine all the time, however my computer wont connect to the internet..... if i plug my cable directly into the modem, my computer will hop on the net with no problems after i restart it.... we have Comcast Cable....
yes i did a search
found tons of stuff on routers but none exactly to my problem..... most of the stuff i found also pertained to wireless routers and ours is not wireless, its corded....

Why can't you hook more than one computer to the modem. your using one node to connect. How many computer are connected to that node is none of comcast busniness, comcast say what they say becuase people don't know any differant and just go with the flow, they also want to pay for each tv hooked to the cable line, they don't know how many tv are hooked to it with the exception of the tv connected to the digital box.
Anyway. My first solution would be to make sure everything on the troubling computer is up to date. Manually go into windows update and make it look for all the updates.
Next doeload adaware, spybot and or a couple other spyware locators and run them. Delete everything those programs find.
Reboot go to run type in msconfig
under the start up box, go though and uncheck everything you know you don't use everyday. leaving the basic computer functions and you virus protection software running.
Hope that helps
Another problem I've encountered is when your running xp pro on one computer and xp home on another. For some reason the xp pro takes over and the xp home computer will have problems keeping a connection. I usually fix it by going into my network places under connections and disabling my LAN connection and re enabaling it. If that didn't work I would unplug and replug in the router.

I am assuming this is a high speed connection and not a dial up modem. When you computer is connected as it was when it isn't working run a couple tests. I am assuming it is a windows box of some flavor. Click the start button --> RUN. In the RUN box type 'cmd'. This will open a command prompt. type 'ipconfig'. This will give you info regarding your ip information.
Next you will want to ping the default gateway listed from your IP configurations. Probably 192.168.100.1 or somthing like it.
In the command window type ping 192.168.x.x (or whatever is listed as your default gateway. Hit enter. If the 'request timed out' comes up. You probably have a problem with your NIC card, hub port or even cable. Trying a new cable or port on the hub are the easiest checks to make. Try those first.
If you ping comes back with reply from 192.168.x.x bytes..........etc
then you can get to your high speed router. Try pinging www.cisco.com.
If that comes back ok, then all should be ok.
Good luck!!! I hope this helps.

Turn off your router and "reboot" it.
I had the same thing happen in our house, (dsl modem into 8 port hub in the basement, tied to 5 port hub upstairs). For some reason, the modem just turned into a fire wall.
Unplugged the modem, waited 15 seconds and plugged it back in. Everything has been working fine since.
The other thing you might want to try...
Turn EVERYTHING off, and then at starting with the modem, turn it all back on, finishing with the computers. When you turn of the routers and modems, unplug them, not just turn tem off.
It basiclly resets the network connections for you automatically. When you have multiple connections and computers, I have found it is just quicker and easier to do it that way.

i tried different cables and i tried differnt ports on the router nothing
when i connect directly to the modem i have internet, when i try anything with the hub i dont... my dad runs some form of xp, my sister and i have 98se
my computer has a recent reformat on it and doesnt have extra crap running in the background
not sure if it matters but it used to work with this router... my dad bought a wireless router and it worked for my sister and him, but would not work with my computer, so i threw a cable in it and it worked fine..... however he removed it and put in the old router that we currently have and it worked.... now all of a sudden, mine doesnt work.... when i tried to actually format the woreless router, it did some wierd stuff and would never work @ all wireless.....

"Format the router"??? I'm thinking you mean update the firmware? Have you ever messed with any of it's settings?
But yeah, I second the unplug/replug everything method. Sometimes things just get jumbled up somewhere (in this case your router) and rebooting everything is the simplest way to solve any problems. If that doesn't work, I would reboot the router, and re-install/update the firmware.
IF that doesn't work... you might need to do a little research. Check out this site for troubleshooting steps: http://www.ezlan.net/index.html

First off, why is your dad running xp and you and your sister running 98? You both should get on his case to have xp on your machine.
If you are running 98, then at the command prompt, run "winipcfg" instead of "ipconfig". IPCONFIG is for NT, 2000 and XP. Let us know the IP address, DNS addresses, and default gateway you get.
Like midiwall says, maybe you hardcode the Comcast IP address and DNS so it works when you connect the modem directly to your pc but not when connected to the router. Just a thought.
