I was doing an internet search an came across thsi forum, in it there was a similar topic to what I am about to ask about but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for so maybe yall can help me figure this out.

Alright, so..
Due to some issues with some idiots we are having to install a wireless security system in our barn (motion activated cameras etc.) Unfortunately we have to keep the main pc in the barn itself an hide it so that it wont be discovered, we can use a wireless internet feed however to monitor the cameras - What I am needing basicly is to know how to hook a Invertor, to a Battery Isolator in order to run 2 batteries so that we can power the computer thats going to be used there.

From what I've sene diagram wise, the Isolator hooks to the altinator of your car, but the way we need to do this wotn involve a vehicle - The computer that this set up will be powering will be in our tack room consealed (hopin to get a laptop to make things alil easier). Is there a way to use the Isolator withot the need for an altinator?

Or would it be better to just use the invertor an periodly switch batteries out?

Anouther question is how long would a battery last is used without an isolator if I was only using 1 battery?? (best guess for just an average laptop or desktop pc)

 

The alternator is just the source of charging for the batteries, so assuming you have some sort of battery charger, that would take the place of the alternator. If the batteries are always going to be sending power to the PC, then you can just hook up a pair in parallel (w/o the isolator). Isolators are of must help when the batteries are just sitting there, keeps one low battery from sucking charge from the higher battery. Get two deep cycle batteries (or one bigger one) and hook it up. How long 1 or 2 batts. will last is determined by how much load you have (how many Amps) and how much reserve capacity the battery(ies) have (Amp Hours). To figure out how long it will run, divide Amp Hours by Amps and that will give you an idea how many Hours the battery will last.
