No transmission of data from computer and a noise
Took my newly acquired 1997 4 x 4 V-6 extended cab pickup to my mechanic to have him go over it from stem to stern to have it all checked out. He says he plugged into the harness behind glove box with an OBD II and was getting no data. He said there is also a place to plug in to a connector under the hood (I think he said it's called the Data Link Connector (DLC3) but he couldn't find his device for that one. Anyone heard of not being able to get data from the harness behind the glove box? Anyone know if he should be plugging in to the DLC3 under the hood?
About the noise. It has 47K miles and I hear a sound coming from under the black plastic timing belt cover, especially when it's at operating temp. It's a steady noise slightly metallic sounding like a dry bearing. Is there something that tends to make a noise like that from there? Thanks for help.

if its a 97, the obd2 diagnostic port is under the dash on the driver side. Its a white connector 16 pin. The "diagnostic port" under the hood is more or less for jumping the fuel pump and for basic diagnostic testing. You need the OBD2 port under the dash though. The timing belt, water pump, and timing belt pulleys are under the timing belt and could all make noise. If your mechanic doesn't know where and how to diagnose a toyota truck new enough to have an OBD2 diagnostic port, i'm not sure i'd trust him.
