no sound!

I removed xp and installed 2000 on my 3 yr old dell desktop. Now I cannot get sound to work.

When I try to access volume control, I get a message:

"There are no active mixer devices available. You must install mixer devices from the Add/Rem Hardware Wizard.."

I dont see how to do this. I opened the box up to try and read a model #, thinking the sound card needed new drivers - no #s, name, nothing.

How do I fix it?

Sounds like you need a driver for your sound card. First step is determining what kind of sound card you have. Good thing it's a dell, because they keep track of that stuff on their website. If you give me the model of the laptop, I'll link you to the driver.
