I'm posting this here b/c i think its probalby a computer software configuration question.

I bought an MP3-capable head unit, i burned some mp3s on a cdrom but when i put it in my head unit, i dont see the titles of the songs. major bummer.

does anyone know how to get the titles to appear? I think its probably somethign that i ddi wrong while burning the cd (configuring?).

It's something about an ID tag Bob.
I think you have to use certain software.

I have several MP3s I converted over to WAV and WMA to play on my head unit in the rig since it doesn't play raw MP3s.

I lost the song titles as well.

 

When you created the disc, did you burn the files as a data disc of MP3s or as an audio CD? If you burned it as a normal audio CD, the track names would be lost (unless you wrote "CD Text" to it and have a CD player capable of reading it). If you burned straight MP3s, I don't see why your head unit wouldn't be able to display them - unless it just doesn't support that feature.

If you post the brand/model of head unit you have, and the software name and version you used to burn the CD, we might be able to help a little more.

i believe i burned it using the "data" program and not the audio one.

a lot of my MP3s didn't have the proper ID tags, and when i transferred them to iTunes, the information didn't show up.

i don't know if roxio lets you do this, but with Real Jukebox you can select a number of songs and convert them to different formats. what i did was just convert them to higher quality MP3s and checked the option to write the tags on the files (the informaiton for the tags was in the Real Jukebox memory, but not each file). so now iTunes recognizes every bit of pertinent information for the songs.

those tags are universal and will now show up when i transfer them to an ipod, or play them in a car stereo.

 

I rip cd's with music match which add the id tags automatically from the internet its also free.
Do you have windows XP?
There no easy way to really do this except go through song by song and enter the id tags in manually. can take hours.

anyway go to the folders you keep your music probably My Music
right click on the song select (propertise) and click on (summary) then enter the text. make sure the song isn't open with another pregram. You can also enter tags in windows media player by right clicking on the song on the right hand list and select the advanced tag editor. <-- this way is nice becuase you can be playing the song

i have W2000 professional but the wife has XP home edition. i tihnk she has the music match application.

however, ill try the properties and advance tage editor method first. thanks for the great tip!

Media player for windows XP has a built in feature to search the net to fill in track information and stuff If you rip your own CD's I use it to retrive data for the CD track information and tittles, savea alot of time so your don't have to name each track yourself. Check options in media player, worth a try but not sure if this is what your looking for. Also I burn my MP3 and WMA to CD as a data disk and my MP3/WMA player in the car shows the titles fine.

 

just to throw this out there I tunes will also burn a cd in mp3 data form

 

I've been away for a couple of days so I fell behind on this topic...

If you haven't figured your problem out yet, you might check to see what type of ID tags your head unit supports. There are a few loose "standards" implemented as ID3V1, ID3V1.1, ID3V2 and probably others. Along the way, the tags were moved from the end of the music file to the beginning, maximum field lengths were changed, and new fields were added (including support for album art, song ratings, lyrics, etc.).

For the most part, MP3 players are written so that they ignore fields that they don't know how to interpret. However, if the head unit expects an ID3V1 tag to exist at the end of the file but doesn't find it because it was written as an ID3V2 tag at the beginning of the file, it won't have anything to display.

I believe you can have both ID3V1 and ID3V2 tags in an MP3 simultaneoulsy. You might look for a program that will write both. That may solve the problem. My preferred MP3 player is Quintessential. It has a pretty robust tag editor, but I don't know if it will write both or not. I haven't really looked into it.

Edit: Just remembered... Winamp writes both tags and can copy ID3V1 tags to ID3V2 or vice-versa.

ok, all your suggestions did help me figure it out. turned out the first cdrom i burned didn't have those id tags. the next one i burned, i burned as a music cd with the tags (which was ok). i burned a third cdrom (w/ tags) as a data cd.

what i didn't do was to change the display status on my head unit. there are several modes and i didn't have it on the "file name" status which allows it to display the song title. RTFM, right guys??!?
