HELP! PC problems in general
OK, in the pc world I'm know as Mr Dumass (Not said "doomaus"). I installed an ATI xtasy 9200 video card onto my PCchips 1200mghz mother board this weekend to play Halo and other games. The game would run maybe 3 to 5 minutes and shut down, back to windows XP main screen. I tried running oldskool unreal tournamenet with the same results. Run at most 3 minutes then shut down. I got a "gathering exception data" error message on both games, and when restarted i got the safe mode prompt. I read in the manual to "turn off the motherboards internal graphics proccessor" So, I get into the BIOS screen...big mistake. I thought I turned off the graphics, instead I turned off the moniter, keyboard and mouse. I was stuck. The motherboard manual said to change the jumper pin position to 2 3 to clear CMOS settings. So I did this. Upon restart the computer came back up, I was prompted to the set up screen, where I loaded "optimal values". the computer came back up and seemed to be running properly, except it has a horrible green tint on the monitor! I'm sure I fubar'd it. any Ideas or suggestions? I took the video card out and uninstalled the software as well, no change in color. i Tried adjusting the monitor itself. nothing.!
Boy did I screw up or what?
any help or ideas are apreciated!
thanks
Mike

if you carefully browse around the CMOS settings there should be something rather obvious....
Now that I think about it, I cant remember if I disabled mine in the CMOS settings or not...There might not have been an option for me to do so. It was a cheap American Megatrend board. I think I may have disabled it in Windows System.
If you goto Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager, you should be able to find it in there and disable it. That is just the software disabling it. Turning it off in the CMOS is like it never existed. I dont really know how well that will work for you.
Check your mother board manual since it appears you have one. There may even be a jumper for this..

another thing is make sure you have the latest drivers installed. You can find them on ATI's site. Video card drivers are updated ALOT. So even if the video card is brand new it could be a few versions behind in the latest availible drivers....

OK, Update. The green tint was caused by a monitor cable pin that had bent over, straightend out... normal color. Reset CMOS settings. Computer is back to square one. Runs fine. Try to play halo it may run 30 seconds it may run 10 minutes, but it will crash out back to desk top, with the "gathering exceptions" error message. I tried to find the on board graphics system to shut it down, no luck! I'm calling the tech line tonight. Do you think an increase in ram might help? I have 733 right now (1200mghz processor, 128mb AGP ATI video card)

does it only do this with halo? If so you might want to look for a halo forum & see if this is a common issue. GTA3 had serious issues when it came out & I found a ton of help for getting it to run on their forums.

Shouldn't be getting hot, its got a large case, lots of room for good airflow and 6 or 7 directed fans. 450w power supply. its not hurting for air or power. I wonder if my video card is just not compatible with the mother board. I'm going to un-install and reload the game, as well as call tech support. I loaded all the updates and no real change. I have not tried UT since the updates. Back to the fans,do you think I may be pulling to much power with them?

Check for excessive dust though. If that's not it, then I'd blame a faulty component somewhere. Just gotta track down the right one, starting with the vid card.
