Dell Finally Goes for AMD

"You read it correctly. It had to happen one day. According to Forbes 'Dell Inc has informed its Taiwan contract makers of plans to develop devices based on Advanced Micro Devices Inc's microprocessors, and these suppliers are awaiting orders for global shipment, the Economic Daily News reported, citing industry sources.'"

About time. I can already see Intel throwing a fit over this, though.

the reason... AMD finally sold more chips than Intel in the last quarter or something. Kinda hard to ignore the number one player these days. Not to mention there 64 bit chip have been on top of the (non dell) server market for QUITE some time.

AMD is similar to Toyota in that it has moved up the ranks and is now surpassing Intel in the CPU business. (I read that a while back too) Many knew they were good, but they have had a hard time over the years getting respect-just like Toyota. I've always had AMD and have been very happy with their CPUs-especially the price. I've been running my Athlon XP 1800+ for quite and a while with no problems. It's old by computer standards, but I can't afford to upgrade right now.

It's good to see them becoming successful, but I just hope their prices will still remain low.

I wouldn't count on it. I'm sure they're tired of being the underdogs and constantly having to prove themselves.

Computer I'm on now has a 1ghz AMD athlon on it. It is about 5 or 6 years old now and I haven't had one single problem (with the processor anyways--rest of the pc is junk). Pretty cool that Dell is moving to AMD.

so i went up to one of the AMD dudes and asked them why DELL hasnt used their stuff yet.

he told me to go the DELL booth and ask the same the thing to them...

will try again in a month -- CES 2006...

Me print/file server is running a AMD K7 500MHz Slot1 processor that Ive been using since 98. That thing never crashes, nor does my FX57 system, yet my one intel system (Alienware notebook) crashes going online.
