Couple of ?'s about XP

First, in the last day or so, on start-up I get this little red circle with a white X down in my toolbar with a message that says I have been infected with spyware. When I click on it, it goes away. I know this happened to me once before but I don't remember what someone told me to do to get rid of it. None of my spyware or virus programs pick up anything. I also get a message at start-up that says Winstall.exe must close and asks if I want to send an error report. Not sure if the two are related.
Second (or third) I went to clean up my computer, cookies and temp files, and found that there are a bunch of different folders on this computer. I'm currently working on a laptop that was given to me by someone after much use, so it has files under his name, files under my name, under administrator, default user, owner.... I'm just wondering how to clean all this up, and which files I can get rid of all together, or if there is a way to get rid of the other profiles completely.
Thanks for the help

you can dump all the temp files no problem as long as you are logged on as computer administrator

As for getting ride of that software use a free program called Hi-Jack this

I ran hijack this but don't really know what to look for. It found a whole bunch of stuff. Is there somewhere that lists what should and shouldn't be there?

Not really a big deal. I am getting a new computer in a couple weeks, but was going to give this one to my GF or put it on our boat to run navigation software, so I wanted to clean it up.

Go to www.hijackthis.de and cut and paste your logfile there. It'll tell you what's ok and what's not.
