Hard wired and mounted my Garmin Nuvi 500 to the right of my HU using a Pro-Fit vehicle specific mount @ http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/.
I first disassembled the cig light adapter plug of the power cable. Then took the small circuit board out. I removed the existing pwr & ground wire using my soldering gun. I heated up the back side of the solder holding the wires in place and then just pulled the wires out. (The gauge of these wires was too thin for my liking and the wires themselves were very short to work with.)
Next, I soldered in longer, heavier gauge wire for both power and ground. Before replacing the circuit board back from which it came, I used my dremel and cut off the shaft of the cig light adapter. I then reinstalled the circuit board and reused the back half of the case to protect the internals. Sealed it back up with some RTV silicone.
I ran the power wire thru a relay so the unit would come on and off with a turn of the key. The ground wire was grounded to part of the dash frame.
With that said, the Vehicle Specific Mount is part number: TY-70-96.
The Garmin Nuvi Adapter Plate is part number: TT-39. (You have to have this adapter plate. It holds the gps to the mount.)
It's a pro-fit vehicle specific mount (VSM for short). Check out their line of universal & VSMs here: http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/
Be warned - the VSMs are $$$. To be fair, I did test 2 other different mounts from 2 other different companies and the pro-fit mount won hands down. I quickly returned the other 2 mounts for a refund. I highly recommend the pro-fit line...albeit a bit pricey.
Rock Slide do you have a link or model number for the exact mount that you used? I just checked out the website you posted and couldn't find a vehicle specific mount for my 4runner...Did you end up using a vehicle specific mount or a universal mount? Thanks! And it looks awesome by the way!!
haha right, actually the reason I asked is that I have a similar alpine HU in my truck. Still use the garmin myself, but for other reasons. I was curious if you had the same complaints about the in truck nav as I do. I hated buying the updated disks for in the alpine supported version.
yea exactly. Well thanks for the write up, I am probably going to do this next weekend. One more question, any knee issues for taller passengers? It doesn't seem like it, but might be close.
