CB's and antennas

Hey again fellas,

Before I make my trip to Ouray and the surroundings, Im gonna purchase a CB radio. Im definitely no expert on CB radios, besides the fact that people seem to like "Cobra" brand.

Im looking to spend less than $100 on one, plus I need an antenna too.

All in all, Id appreciate your advice on what kind of CB radio and model to get, along with a good antenna...and are detachable antennas a good thing to buy? Id prefer not to have it on 24/7 if I dont have to...but I can cope if need be.

Thanks fellas ,

Brewsky

You can always do this setup. Hand held CB with a magnetic base Antenna. Radioshack has a real nice hand held CB for $98.00. It is rechargable (nicad Batt) or can be used with the included cig lighter power cord. Then pickup a magnetic base antenna, (also radioshack) hook it to the antenna mount on the handheld CB and your all set. No cutting, mounting, grinding, quick and easy.

I hear handheld CB's dont have a good range...about 4 miles is what Ive seen...would the magnetic antenna help a lot?

What is the usual range on a mounted, or non-handheld CB radio? Im just trying to keep my options open...either way Ill probably use a magnetic antenna.

Thanks,

Any hand held CB has the same (FCC Reg. output, range) as any fullsize "Hard install" CB (unless modified). The key to it IS the magnetic mount antenna connected to the handheld CB. The higher up on the rig the better. The setup I have is a handheld (midland) CB connected to a magnetic mount antenna (on the roof) when needed. This is a quick and simple way to run a CB with decent range for any road trip. (ie) Hear trucker reports on traffic, backups, Cops running radar, etc.

Cobra radios used to be the way to go.These days the Uniden is the one to have.It uses the same board the older Cobras used.Strong TX and an excellent receive circuit.
Id reconsider the handheld unit. They just dont do the job a mobile set up will and are designed more for roadside emergency use.

Uniden has some great rebates going right now that make their units even more attractive.
If it were me? Id go with a simple Uniden,PC 68 or 78XL depending on the features youre looking for and a wilson 1000 magnetic roof mount.
The wilson antennas have excellent receive capabillities and are extreemly durable.Moreso than the Firestick antennas everyone seems to go with and the transmit and receive far better than any fiberglass set up Ive ever seen.
Hope this helps
