Alot of things.
I had a 400 watt Boomer linear and I would drive to the top of Benton mountain just to outtalk everyone.
They are good for an emergancy situtation like getting stuck or to find out if any pigs are ahead of you radaring.
Also sometimes you can just turn them on and listen to local people cutting up or whatnot.
Recomended to at least try, find your local channel, and sit back and listen.

Firesticks are cr@p!!
Get a GOOD antenna like a Wilson 1000 or 5000.
Better yet,get a Predator 10k!!
CB s are my thing along with ham radio (sometimes called HF).
Ive got a nice collection of base stations and mobiles and do some buying, selling and trading of the same.
Id gladly answer any ???'s you might have to get you started.

We use CBs all the time on trail runs.
From the moment we leave the Safeway parking lot they are on so the "train" can be in touch as we motor on up to the mountains.
Since I still have not replaced one of my amps in the rig for my stereo, the CB is on all the time now on channel 17, the trucking channel.
I have gotten to know many local and long haul truckers names, and also there are a few "big base" stations on there as well that are local.
I use it for traffic before getting on Interstate 5 by SeaTac airport.
If the traffic is fubared as in a wreck (happens about once or twice a week like clock work) I take an alternate route home.
Very usefull for local traffic info.
But the best use of it is, is on trail runs so everyone knows what is going on.
Around here with my super tuned Cobra NightWatch 29, I get out over 25 miles talking to these guy's.
Pretty good for a CB.
On a good day when the "skip" rolls in, I can yak from Washington state clear back to Alabama and better.
It is also entertaining to hear the stuff some of these guy's say.
Heard some good jokes, but none that I will repeat in here

I have a good antenna, my SWR match is below 1.25 on all channels, and I had the radio "modded" to 25 watts output.
That is called a super tune, and most CB shops can perform this on a radio that is capable of being modded.
Skip works by bouncing the transmission off of the ionosphere during the day time.
Some CB'ers live for that by shooting and recording who they talk to.
Do a search on Google for CB skip, and you should get many hits.

All the time, smokey, county mounty, bear in the air, kojack with a kodak, or just plain old,
"there is a cop on I-70 west, mile 343"
I have never been suprised by a cop on the interstate.

Ok. I just bought one yesterday. http://www.rfwiz.com/VertexStandard/...00_InfoDat.htm
I was told on this site that I can't use it without a license from the FCC.
I don't know a lick bout this type of thing and the guy I bought it from didn't mention a license being needed unless I wasn't paying attention. Can anyone tell me what is involved in getting licensed? How much? What can I search for on the net? I want to use it and not be out $$$ I paid. He left the wires in his truck since he is upgrading and it only has the power wire. The dood is a long haul trucker friend of my dads in case anyone was wondering why he has a radio that I cannot use.
EDIT: some guys said it's not a CB, and the "other" forum where my original was bumped to isn't getting any traffic. I have a new toy and want to use it

I set up a deal a few weeks ago to buy this guy's CB, but unfortunately have had a lot of things pop up with school, frat, and g/f, so I'm still hoping to make my way down there to pick it up and get some friends to help install it, I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
