There's an illustrated guide but I can't locate the link right now -- search here and at toyota-4runner.org

2002 instructions in a nutshell:
Always a good idea to disconnect neg battery lead before beginning.
Open console lid, then lift up the back of the cupholder piece until the two clips disengage, then lift the middle/forward part of the piece until the forward clips disengage. Lift the back of the shifter trim piece and its clips will disengage. Turn 90degrees to lift off the shifter (2WD, 4WD may be different). Remove ashtray, then pull outward on the bottom of the center dash piece until the lower clips disengage. Run your fingers up the sides and continue pulling until remaining clips disengage. Two roughly in the middle, two near the top near the vents. Yes, the vents come out with it. disconnect all the electrical stuff as needed to access head unit. Four 8mm bolts (also take phillips driver) hold in the headunit.

It goes a lot quicker than it sounds after a time or two. Watch out for clips popping off the trim and hiding in the dash. Had to get a bit further in there than I'd intended one day when one of them decided to play hide & seek.
