Suggestions for vertical mounted CD player??
I bought one of those Tuffy center consoles (with radio mount) for the cruiser. The radio mounts vertical. The stereo place doesn't know if their CD radios will work without skipping if mounted vertical (ask "why would you mount it like that") Don't think they were even born when my 71 FJ was built
Anyone know of a decent unit? One that performs in a vertical mounted position? I don't need/want an expensive radio, military jets and gunfire have taken their toll on my hearing.

It doesnt really matter, i had my deck out testing it and it worked on it's side just fine. The player doesnt care how it's mounted, because it "captures" the CD, it's not like the cd drawer in your pc. You shouldnt have a problem.

i had mine mounted in a custom console at 45* skipped a bit... console was 3/4 mdf bolted to floor with rubber isolators holding plate that held radio in sleeve... It didnt like it, skipped a lot with heavy bass (not what you have) but still a little with normal driving and no subs... sorry i dont have any suggestions, but your console will most likely be better and not transfer as many vibrations...
also, if mounted vertically, the heatsink for all the aftermarket radios I have seen is mounted in the back of the radio, which would be the lowest point in your configuration, if mounted vertically, the heat would be inclined to travel UP, into the radio more than it may have been designed
I would either try to go with a radio with out a ton of features, (animated displays, lots of bells and whistles) as they may tend to run warmer (maybe), you could even experiment with a couple very inexpensive radios from Wal-Mart or similar (that also offer 30 or more day 100% satisfaction guarantees) the same goes from Best Buy, they would probably be willing to take a return if it didnt work out, just be very clean in your install in case you need to unwire and return it

Cd players should work in virutally any position you can think of however they will be best at resisting skipping if mounted normally. However you should be ok if mounted vertically...cheaper cd players are cheaper for a reason - they skip more easily. So if ya can get a decent pioneer from some place that will giveyou a cash refund should you not be happy.

i dont know...
background: all my cd players since mid 80s have been sony cd changers.
and in all of them, they can be mounted from 0 degrees (flat) to 90 degrees (vertical). and all of them have a rotating thingee switch on the side to indicate what degree the changer is in.
once, i remounted it (from flat to vertical) and forgot to rotate the switch and it was skipping like crazy.
edit: when i did have my wrx, that came with a subaru 5 cd changer up front... lol... but when i exchanged that for the STi, which didnt come with a sound system, i did install a sony cd changer setup in there too...

I would recomend a cheaper marine type radio, otherwise the first time you spill your drink or leave the lid open with the top off and it rains just a little bit, it will be toast. Sony sells some in the $200 ballpark, seems like a good deal.
