Odd Power Antenna Issue

I'm not sure what this is, a few broken gear teeth maybe?

When I turn my radio on, the antenna goes up but stops a few inches short of fully extended and the motor keeps running and running. If you get out and pull up a little on it the motor stops.

When you turn the radio off, the antenna cannot retract. The motor keeps running and running again though. If you give it a little nudge it will lower and stop as normal.

So what is busted? How can I replace it? I don't want to switch to a whip, I like having it down when wheeling.

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like the teeth in the retractor cable are busted. You have to pull your fender, remove the motor, crack it open and clean it out. Then feed a new cable into it. The cable is plastic and is prone to breakage. The motor should be fine. The quick fix is to remove the antenna and cable thru the antenna hole. Then feed a new cable into it. The problem with the quick fix is the bits of plastic are still inside the motor.

Bummer, fender removal sounds like a chore. Maybe i can suck em out with a shop-vac and a small tube?

The bad news is I doubt you can suck out the broken bits. The good news is you don't really need to remove the fender, just a few of those plastic fender liner clips. Check out the below threads...

The below is for the whip mod, but steps 1-4 set out how to get to the power antenna motor.

In all, it should take you longer to go out and buy the replacement antenna mast than to open up the motor and fish out the broken bits.

Good Luck-
