Looking for good 4" speakers

I have a '92 pickup, and have gone through 2 sets of 4" speakers under the dash in two years . First set was Sony, second set was Kenwood. Fairly expensive sets, and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how much friggin money I have to spend on 4's to get a set that doesn't blow out. Any suggestions? I don't think I'd spend more than $150 for the pair unless you're convincing (The Kenwoods were $95/pair).

Edit: I'm no pro at this crap, so if I sound like a j/o whining about $95/pair for 4's let me know.

My POS new Pioneer deck is 50x4, and I have no amp. I think my last deck (Aiwa) was 50x4 also. The speakers are just round 4". You can't fit ovals in there, can you? I never checked really.

I chose Alpine Type S 4", and I'm powering them with a Fosgate amp.... i believe its 100RMS x 4... The sound excellent and no distortion at full volume with a properly tuned amp (xovers etc...)

JBL GTI series if they are still made. Or try Morel

MB Quart has gone to ish and is made by Rockford now I think, which went downhill. MB is no longer made in Germany.

Whoever owns Rockford now also owns Lightning audio and Infinity.

Just my .02

I'm alos no audio expert. I can't distinguish every last sound in the music. There fore take my opinion as that, my own. I went to a local shop here in town and listened to their 4" speakers and found the pioneer ts-g1040r to be the best when not amplified. I compared them to rockford fosgates, alpine and infinity's. I can understand the infinity's being very popular but for overall use, my "ear" for music, and price to performance needs: I took the normal price of 49.99 set of pioneers. Granted I got hooked up and only paid $25.

Hope it helps

Ya I have 4" infinities up front and they are pretty awsome... Buy them at best buy or somewhere where you get a warrenty... I paid $10 more for a 4 year warrenty, which covers blowouts

Infinity is owned by harman kardon. they also own JBL, and a few other high end product lines. Rockford Fosgate and Lightning Audio are not owned by Harmon International.

Netwt12 is correct, and secondarily, yes the corporation that owns rockford also owns MB but that does not mean that all MB's are the same as RF's stuff....

Anyhow - you are quickly finding what many have told me in my distant past when I went looking for good 4s...... There are not any - well not any that will play anything lower than about 120hz worth a damn. Above 120hz, sure tons of em! I had some old alpine sps 1029 4"ers. Then I got tired of no midbass and built kickpanels for a set of 6.5" orions. Problem solved!

There are depth limitations if you want to use stock mounting locations in my Cruiser....

A lot of people on IH8MUD.com suggested 4" Eclipses for my rear doors....no complaints, but you are going to have to figure out a way to cut the lower frequencies out, no 4" will produce good mid-bass....maybe why you are blowing everything!

Get a diff headunit or install an amp, a crossover, soemthing, to keep from overloading those little things....

Of course, you are going to have to get some kind of low range capable speakers to handle the frequencies you need to block from those 4"ers

Ditto. The kappa's are famous for their highs. That way you can have some nice/reasonable bass fill in the back and still hear every word clearly.

i use infinity 4" reference. they arent the best, but they work!

if you are really into it, get some kicker pods, and put some 6.5" speakers in them and amp them! i really wanna do that, but im lacking the money :-(

i just put in some rockford 4"...i work at bestbuy so they were the best choice price-wise..

they sound a HELL Of a lot better than stock and if i put some dynamat and make some boxes they will sound a ÅÅÅÅlaod better...they are a lot louder than stock but they are only 50w or so rms and 100 max...they are loud enough for fronts for my highs

they are 2ways by the way...and yes..they do produce a little bit of midbass if i turn the basslink off

your 4" will never be that loud..espeicaly if you dont amp them. If you have 4" speakers an a sub all your gonna hear is boom boom boom...your gonna need 6x9's or a pair of compnent sets that are amped...

brandontrek has some decent pioneer 4" speakers and a single Jl w0 10" running 300rms and you cant hear the 4" speakers up front...he has two 3 way amped (i think) 6x9s that sound great that cover the frequency range pretty well and you still get your midbass.
